Hi All!

We just got off the Hefey track. We spent five nights on the trail and had a great time. The rain held off and we covered over 45 miles! Uploading pictures has proven difficult but we will try to get a few up from out track in the next week.

I had never done "real camping" before so it was a real pleasure for me. We spent the night at the trail head with a nice couple who had to turn back because they weren't prepared. Figures they would wimp out as they were Canadians!

The next four nights we would walk 8 and 15 miles a day. We went through dense woodlands, open marsh, large grasslands, up mountains, though tropical bush and finished along the Tasman sea. Incredible variety in such a short tramp! They have huts set up about every 6 miles but we chose to use the camp sights. We met another couple from Germany, many from NZ, played cards and bathed in the fresh but chilled water. It was great to get water out of a stream and be able to drink it (though we did treat it usually)!

Were back in a hostel now and appreciate the hot showers and meals. Tomorrow we're going to get a ride with a gentleman we met hitch hiking yesterday to Nelson to pick up the car. From there we will go to our first WWOOF farm for ten days. We should have Internet and will try to update as much as possible. Take Care!

Eric made it to Christchurch 1/5/09
Good to hear your back and had a good tramp. Hope you can get the pics worked out, anxious to see pics. Eric landed ok in Christchurch, had to switch to shorts...talked about eating ice cream on the beach. Ha! Watched a globel treks show on New Zealand yesterday, they talked about WOOFERs and showed a farm on north island with emus and sheep. Hope it goes well. Kara and Dan
