Its A Puzzle To Me

I got a lift from Franz Josef to Wanaka with Helen - a Bournemouth girl on a gap year (or two) between school and university.

The drive down was scenic in the extreme and on many occasions we swerved the battered Subaru off of the road so we could exploit another breathtaking photo opportunity.

Before arriving in Wanaka we visited puzzleworld. There was a pretty standard maze and hologram gallery, but the interesting thing was a room tilted at about 30 degrees. The illusion created by the slanted floor allowed the eye to trick you into think that water and snooker balls were rolling/flowing uphill. Helen was very disorientated by the slanted floor, and almost fell over a couple of times. Of course rather than hold on to her I laughed and took photos.

Still feeling a little under the weather I just relaxed for the rest of the afternoon, before Helen, Yumi and I went to the cinema. Yumi was a girl from Japan staying in our dorm who was in NZ doing a course on teaching english to japanese school children. The film we saw was called Lord Of War, and starred Nicholas Cage. The real star though was the famous Wanaka 'Paradiso Cinema'. The cinema is famous for its seating - sofas, airline seats and even a decapitated Morris Minor make it feel more like a large lounge (or even a clean scrapheap!) than a small cinema. And the half time interval where we could buy local microbrew beer and ginger and white chocolate cookies (still on the cooling rack!) made for an excellent cinemographic experience. If only Basildon cinema was this cool!
