We awoke in Wellington after a heavy night all tired and hung over knowing we had the notoriously rough north to south island ferry crossing to look forward to. So with some reluctance we got on the bus and headed to the port. In the end we were lucky as we had a pretty gentle crossing considering some of the horror stories I had heard which was good as we were able to enjoy the views as we left the harbour and catch up on some sleep. On arriving on the south island we headed to the town of Nelson which is the location of the Abel Tasman national park. The hostel we were staying in called Fern Lodge was run by an English guy who had lived in the region for over 35 years and ... read more

It had been raining most of the night which made us worry we would not be going. With a clear(ish) head we rang the canyoning company to see if the trip was still on, they we going to wait a while to see if they could get a better forecast. We called the company again and they said they would give it a go. Down in the shop Nicola and Mike were not convinced that once we got there we would be able to get in the canyon as there had been so much rain but there was only one way to find out. The roads and Nicola’s driving made everyone feel a little sick. We stopped at a lodge on the famous Routeburn track and put on our wetsuits and safety equipment. We walked for ... read more

Arriving into Queenstown, you turn a corner coming out of Kingston and are hit by this view of mountains towering over a crystal clear glass lake. What completes the perfect picture is the omnipresent sheep grazing by the water's edge. Queenstown is really beautiful, and quite quaint but some of it's charm has been stolen by the hordes of backpackers that fall out of the bars and up and down the streets. It has the most picturesque scenery and it is an adventure haven for thrill junkies so it is easy to see why people gravitate there. We also got to stay in a campsite for the first time here so it was highly exciting, mind you the filling of the camper van with water, finding out our electricity didn't work and other tasks to be ... read more

Well I had a great adventure on Saturday and Sunday. I stored my gear at the lodge I'm staying at, packed my backpack and headed out for a tramp (Kiwi term for hiking). The Routeburn track is one of New Zealand's "Great Walks" and also where some of the "Lord of the Rings" was filmed. I took the Tramper's bus to the trailhead and started off around 10am. I was pretty tired from the bike and hike from the day before and wasn't sure if I had the energy to hike 4 miles into camp and then another 8 miles Round trip to a view point. The hike in was wonderful. I crossed a couple of suspension bridges as I followed the Routeburn river. The river was strewn with large grey white boulders and emerald green ... read more

Well I got a late start today as I headed out for a ride along the lake to the trailhead for the Greenstone track. I was told there was a short loop hike that linked the Greenstone track to Lake Rere and Elfin Bay. So I headed out on another beautiful sunny hot day. I rode 7.5 miles along the lake on a rolling gravel road. The views were stunning. I got to see the mountains that I had bused along the day before from this side of the lake. Also I got glimpses of Mt. Aspiring to the Northwest. A beautiful glaciated peak in the Southern Alps. I arrived at the trailhead and found many cars and about 2 dozen trampers. I expected the trail to be crowded but I think they were all waiting ... read more

Well, I forgot to mention that as I was driving down the road with the fishermen I offered to by them dinner because I was so greatful to be rescued. The guide said he'd love to but it was valentines day and he had to take his wife out. Great, I thought its Valentines Day and here I am having a miserable rain soaked day from hell. Then it dawned on me it was Valentines Day here but it was only the 13th in the US. I suddenly felt better. Tomorrow would be a better day. It was. Talk about vast differences in cycling. Yesterday had been the worst riding day I've ever had. Today was one of the best days I've had riding in New Zealand. I almost had given up on riding but after ... read more

So yesterday I was jazzed and ready to ride. My plan was to take the back road to Queenstown. I'd bike on a gravel road to "Mavora Lakes"( Sight of Lake of Mists in Lord of the Rings), make camp, hike a bit, and then head to Walter Station the next morning and catch a vintage steamboat to Queenstown. I couldn't wait. So much so that I ignored the weather forecast that called for a rain front moving in with heavy rain. How bad could it be. I had rain gear and I could pitch my tent at the lakes and wait it out if needed. If only I'd listened to my intuition. I had reservations about riding. I thought just ride into town and take the bus. No, I told myself. I was going to ... read more

Back in Queenstown briefly before heading over to Christchurch for my flight tomorrow. Rachel and I have done some more stunning treks and the area around here and the fjords really warrants weeks of trekking! We really enjoyed doing part of the Routeburn trek and the night on Milford Sound was awesome (in the original sense of the word!). Stayed at a private hostel yesterday where the owner took us out on his yacht so we could go swimming in the lake. So, we've now swum at the most Northerly and Southerly points we've visited in New Zealand (Russell in the Bay of Islands and Manapouri in Fiordland). I've posted some pictures on my last entry too, if you fancy taking a look at those. Next stop - Sydney!... read more

Days 71 - 74 Firstly, happy birthday Beath!!! We started the day with a trip to Puzzling World - where surprise surprise there were lots of puzzling things, like holograms, wonky rooms, a big maze and of course puzzles!! We then headed to a bungy site - the original bungy site at K-bridge. We had no real intention of doing one but got caught up in the moment and the next thing we knew we were harnessed up and standing on the edge of a 43 m platform over a river. Carly went first and jumped like a spaz, making life difficult for herself by doing the most twisting and turns out of anyone. She was happy enough though and really enjoyed it. Next Disco Stu jumped off like an absolute pro, flying through the air ... read more

It's been a while since the last blog because I've been so busy covering over two thousand kilometres of both North and South Islands of New Zealand and haven't had a chance to sit down at a computer for a proper internet session until now! I arrived on 6th January and met Rachel Borer at the airport the same morning. How we managed to coordinate my flight from Santiago and hers from London is a miracle and we have shown none of this organisational spirit during our journey since then! We hired a car and it's been a spontaneous whistle-stop tour, spending 10 days on the North Island before crossing over to the South. New Zealand really is a beautiful country and the three weeks I have don't do it justice. My main impression is that ... read more
