Today was a geology day - a day jam packed with rocks. I expected the children’s excitement to be palpable - apparently not. As we toured around the Oamaru area going from one rock formation to another, the progeny hunkered down in the back watching entirely inappropriate episodes of CSI. We did do a lot of walking and once out of the car, the kids had to concede that the views and even the geology were worth the intermittent breaks from dramatic crime scene investigation. We headed out to eplore Waitaki District in Otago only after fueling up the car with petrol ($1.50/litre) and myself with a flat white ($3.50 for take away). I have decided that the flat white is really a cafe au lait. I had my first really good cafe au lait at ... read more

After a month of longer, more leisurely stops of 4-6 days each, this has been a week mostly on the move. Heading south from the most northern part of the country, we arrived in Cambridge (a sweet country town in the center of North Island) to meet Ken and Ilonca Feisst. Ken is the brother of our good Seattle Kiwi friend, Alan Feisst. We were treated to a tour of the magnificent high hills of the largely Feisst sheep farm where Ken and Alan grew up. After a sumptuous meal and far too much NZ wine at the Feissts' home, we slept like fallen stones. The next day a short drive took us to Waitomo and two sites we really loved. The first was the Otorohanga Kiwi and native bird House. Kiwis (the birds) are ... read more

Rach's blog The weather was still fine as we left our first non-powered site at Mount Cook. For the first time, I took the wheel of the campervan. I was rather nervous at first, and Ian’s gestures suggested that I was driving in the gutter, but anyway my road positioning improved, I think, and I navigated us safely to Oamaru. After laying anchor at our new campsite, we set off to explore the town. We didn’t get far before the sound of live music coming from the pretty public gardens attracted us towards it. Before our eyes stood Oamaru’s Food and Wine Festival in full swing. How fortuitous, I thought, as Ian paid the entrance fee and sped towards the first wine tent! Before long Ian had his snout in a glass of Riesling and was ... read more

We've travelled for just over 2 fabulous weeks now in NZ and we've had such a great time. The highlights of couse was the skydive! We had the perfect day for it which was really lucky because the weather was bad the day before and the day after. I have to say tho after jumping 15,000ft I really want to do it again! Mainly because I dont think I apreciated everything because I was taking in so much after I was pushed from the plane! So I definitely think I would enjoy it more a 2nd time!!! (not sure I can afford it....but I hope so! ;o) Ulrika had a camera man jump with her so everyone ... read more

It might have cost me my health but i spent the night in this tiny town called Oamaru on the beach waiting for Baby Blue Penguins to come ashore. They where just about the most adorable things I have ever seen. We were not suppose to take their pictures because they have very sensitive eyes, and the flash blinds them for quite some time. We had this one, Jason named him Sam, fallow us around the parking lot area yelling at us. I guess we got a little to close to his home. They like to hide underground in burrows during breeding season, and when winter comes they stay out at sea and travel around feeding. This entire town is in love with Penguins, they used to be called a nuisance because they roosted in peoples ... read more

24 February Queenstown is the home of Bungy jumping. So early this morning we headed out for the bridge at Kuwarau Bridge, where it all started. They start jumping at 9:00 am. We got there shortly thereafter. The place was already busy. They fasten you around the ankles, but there is an extra harness which goes around your waist and thighs. If you want, they will dunk your head in the river, but most people don’t want it. When you are finished bouncing around a small row boat comes over to get you - they pull you in and un-hook you. It was really quite cold there today, and one girl jumped twice with only her bra and jeans. So, did we or did we not jump? Now, this evening we are in Oamaru on the ... read more
