The first thing I'd say about driving up the west coast is WATCH OUT FOR the sand flies! They are annoying little hard black bugs that spring up on your legs as you dance in a phone booth trying to shake them off. Their bites are more itchy than mosquito bites, and stay for more than a week. Once one starts to itch you find yourself standing like a monkey scratching here and there. Why a phone b... Different feel than, say Wellington, isn't it?

dominates the centre of the city. You can't see that well from this angle, but it is on top of a big hill. The historic photos in the lobby document its significance in the development of the community.

This was at the back of the cathedral. A bit different take on the saints staring down at you.

The Anglican church is on to a good thing, using a maze for meditation. There are instructions on the wall for walking and using it for reflection and relaxation. It's behind the part where the priest stands.

Have I mentioned yet that Kiwis love to wander along downtown streets with no shoes? It's a habit not confined to the very young or those with limited means - how many shoeless can you see?

The sign is on the main drag of Nelson, but the street itself has some houses on it.

You don't see much of this in New Zealand - I think it must just be decorative, unlike where Erin worked last year in the poorest parts of Jamaica, where these are locked up at night.

This is as close as we got. Too tired for the climb. This marks the spot of the geographical centre of the country. There is a thing sticking up that is on a monument, probably.

Never saw Bluff
Hi Julie No we never made it to Bluff, though I would have liked to have had time for it. I have a cousin in Invercargill whom we visited and saw a little bit of the city during the day before they came back from work. I would have liked to have seen the end of Highway 1 as well, as we saw the beginning of it in the Northland. We had to hurry on as we only had a few days for the west coast before taking the ferry back to Wellington. So Bluff got dropped from the agenda, unfortunately.
