We are writing this in Nelson, having arrived a few days early, due to heli hike cancellation. That is the beauty of doing a trip by campervan, you can change your plans at the last minute. Murchison was not on our list of places to visit, but a chance meeting with a cool weegie backpacker who had tramped all over NZ for the past 15 years sent us in this direction. We arrived here at arround 11pm last night so could not tell what it was like until this morning. Murchison is one of the best places in NZ to white water raft and having not ticked that off our list yet, this was why we headed here. We trusted the weegie as the lonely planet also backed this up. Jen drove initially through deep wooded valleys that widened to become cropped with all manner of fruit tree and hops with occasional vines. Large mountains (The Twins and Mount Arthur loomed in the distance to the West. We arrived at Motueka (or Mot as the locals abbreviate it). We had arranged to meet Charlotte at her parents (where she had returned for the weekend from Christchurch). When we arrived there it turned out to be a gorgeous house in beautiful gardens - the whole sitting in apple orchards which are the family business. Charlotte introduced us to her parents and showed us our room, which was wonderful as we were allowed to use one of the boutique bedrooms normally reserved for paying guests. Today I'm in Murchison on the S. Island. Its the kayaking center for the South Island. Unfortunately there isn't any water. Yesterday I did a very low water run of the Earthquake section of the Buller River. Like everywhere else in the world, the kayakers are hoping for rain. Alot happened in my last week on the N. Island, but I'm going to share that later. I want to wait until I can upload some pics with it, because... well I don't know I just want to. But I thought I would talk a bit about driving in N.
