Milford Sound 3rd - 5th March

A beautiful, beautiful place - shame about the noise of small planes and helicopters overhead which kind of intrude on what should be a quiet and tranquil place. The drive there was amazingly stunning too. Very dramatic.

We had a wander around the tiny harbour where there are some lovely short walks which give great views over the sound. We could hear 'naughty' keas on our campsite, but not see any - they are very inquisitive parrots that can be a little 'destructive' with anything that takes their interest. We made sure we left nothing out for them to 'play' with!

Our main day was spent kayaking on Milford Sound. We had a brilliant time - so lucky with the weather as the sun shone the whole time (they get between 6 and 8 METRES of rain a year!!!). We kayaked past Bowan Falls and stopped there for a closer look, and a snack - Rob is still eating non-stop! It was a little rough in one place, but that was quite fun. It was a nice easy kayak back, with the wind behind us. It definitely is the best way to

A spectacular view
see the sound - no noisy boat and rambling commentry to spoil the silence and peacefulness of the place - just us and nature (cheesy, but true).

We leave here to go to Te Anau for the start of our 4 day walk on the Milford Track. We could see from our kayaks the bridge where the walk ends back at Milford Sound - 53 kms in total! Let's hope the weather is kind to us and we don't get a deluge of constant rain (once, on ONE day here they had over 2ms of rain) -if so we'll have to surf the track!
