Milford Sound to Lake Ohau
"In the morning we'll breakfast on board before heading back to the mainland. We travel past Lake Te Anau and the Clutha River to Arrowtown for the chance to find gold. Then we head to the Southern Alps to our lodge at Lake Ohau which affords views over Australasia's tallest peak, Mt. Cook."
I can't say I slept well. I'd roll over and apparently I'm a violent roller because I'd thwack my arm against the cabin wall. At least the sheets/beds were clean, so I didn't have that fear all night (not sure if I'll ever be able to try an overnight train again... thanks Egypt.) We had breakfast on the boat and it had rained last night and was still raining so suddenly we could see all these waterfalls they had talked about. They were beautiful! This was what I expected "Rivendell" to look like- no Digital FX needed here! We saw dolphins, seals and even penguins- it was a cool morning. We docked around 9am and got back on the bus and headed over to Lake Ohau.
I can't remember much about the trip to our
hotel in Lake Ohau (the Lake Ohau Lodge
). I do remember that right before we got to the hotel we had to cross the "Bridge of Doom" as Emmo and Mikey had nicknamed it. They were concerned enough with the weight of the bus/our luggage/us that they actually had us get out and walk across the bridge (luckily it wasn't raining there.) We all watched as Mikey and Emmo slowly followed on the bus, cheered, and got back on and shortly thereafter pulled into the hotel.
iIt's a beautiful location and I was kind of photographed out so i didn't take many shots. If you're in the Lake Ohau area though, I recommend it. Most of us paid $2 extra for a spare sheet because we were going to have a toga party that night. We had a nice dinner, poor Alex ended up missing the beginning of dinner because she was hauling our crap into another room because she couldn't get the door to lock on our old room- sorry Alex! I had really spread my stuff out all over. After dinner we went back to our rooms to wrap ourselves up in sheets and try to make them look
like togas. I tried doing it the way the people at the hotel demonstrated, but it wasn't looking too hot on my larger frame. So, I ended up making a long toga dress that went all the way to the floor. I called it "Taliban Toga". Alex put on her bikini and did a skimpy (but cute) little wrap around. I called her "Hawaiian Tropic Toga". Talk about yin and yang!
We headed to the hotel bar and, as seems to be the case when it comes to dress up on Contiki, the guys stole the show. Mikey was once again pantless with a sheet kind of tied around him. Emmo had the toga on right but was showing quite a bit of cheek (as in ass). Then some other guys on the group had simply twirled their sheets and wrapped them on as Sumo wrestler type diapers. So, a lot of ass shots that night. I hung in the bar for about 30 minutes and then popped into the tv room to see what they were watching. "The Ugly Truth" with my future husband, Gerard Butler. So, that's where I hung for the next 1.5 hours. After the
movie I popped my head back into the bar, decided I was done, and went back to the room to try to pack Monstro more efficiently. I was getting tired of carrying 2 carry on bags onto the bus each day because stuff wasn't fitting in Monstro. Tomorrow, we head to Christchuch and the tour ends.
