Fri. 27th.
At 5:30, we were collected from our lodge and taken to a Maori settlement for, hopefully, a unique evening. Hundreds of us sat in a marquee, waiting for dusk, and being entertained, by what we are sure is, a scouse Maori. His humour was terrific. Then the "tribe of 20 nations" (us) were taken into the forest to be frightened half to death by the Maori tribal dance, and thoroughly entertained by their customs. Then back to the marquee, where the "hangi" had finished cooking, and had been taken out of the hole in the ground, and thankfully put on plates for us to eat. As much lamb, chicken, etc. etc. as you could eat plus delicious deserts. We were then given torches, and taken to see their sacred stream, surrounded by Gloworms, really magical. On the coach journey back our driver serenaded us with a beautiful Maori song. This made the hairs stand up on the back of the neck'
