Kaikoura Whale watch
After the rugby match (yeah pretty long day but still) we drove up to Kaikoura, where we booked a whale watch tour for the next morning. well, first for the afternoon, but due to the flight changes we changed into morning. If this would be a right decision (whale watch technically) we'll see later on at www.whalewatch.co.nz where they show the number of whales seen on the tours.
Anyway, after sleeping in a dorm (we thought we booked a double but we shared the room with 4 others; we decided not to complain as it was 1 AM already when we arrived), we started the whale tour at 9.30 am. When we got off shore, we quickly heard a sperm whale beneath us, the shipper knows by its sound when it's coming up. After waiting a while the whale showed its back on the surface, and quickly rolled itself around in the water, the last part was most spectacular, the tail splashing into the water.
The second (sperm) whale stayed a little longer so that we could spend time making the best fotos. After 15 minutes viewing we went on. the third one was again a quick Whale Wachting (and more....)
Catching a Sperm Whale and a Royal Albatros in one shot ! visit on the surface...
The whales are 20-30 meters long.
But then a big group (school?) of dusky dolphins past by!! They gave a real nice show, jumping around, frolicking in the water. They were with 245.
We were happy that we didn't skip this tour!!
after the tour we returned quickly to Christchurch, returned the car at the rental service (they didn' t see the missing tyre cap (?? wieldop), so we were lucky...) and on to catch the plane to Auckland.
There we spend the night in a NZAir arranged 4-star hotel nearby the airport. We got a nice meal and slept on nice beds before we received our wake up caal at 4.30 AM...
