I have made my way down to Fox Glacier through Hokitika, where I wanted to see the gorge, even though the weather turned against me and it was raining all day I still went, I have never seen such a blue water..…Once I arrived at Fox Glacier the rain had stopped which made it good to go and see the Glacier itself. I almost booked a tour to go on the Glacier, but then it would mean I would have to stay in one spot for 2nights and the weather did not look that good, although I was hoping for it to clear by the next day…. I went to a campsite on Gillespies Beach and it rained again. In the night I was thinking when is the big wave coming to get me, such a thunderstorm and wind I was wondering whether it is worth it talking the swimming suit out… my hoping for better weather did not happen, it was raining again in the morning, quite heavily… as I was leaving the paddocks were flooded some of them had streams coming through them and the view of Fox Glacier that I saw previous day was no where to be
seen, as I was driving on the highway the water starting to come up from the ditches onto the road.. I was thinking it is good time to leave don’t want to get stranded here and in the end was so relieved that I had decided not to book the tour.
With weather like this there was no point for me to try to go on any walks; I decided I would make it all the way to Queenstown. And so by 2 o’clock I was in Queenstown, I wanted to take advantage of my discount for jet ride, I called the Shotover boat company to book my ride, however they were closed due to the high level of the river, they were hoping to reopen again by 3.30, so I booked it…. Come 3.30 the river was still high and I had to book it for the morning, which meant I had to postpone the Para-flight for 10 am. So I had the whole afternoon in a Queenstown, what will I do… it was full of shops, and too touristy… I headed out of town, but did not want to go too far as I was hoping to find
a nice spot to park and sleep over… and I did on the other side of the bank of the Shotover river, ideal…. There was one guy Dave- kiwi, who has been camping out there for months, had a fire permit… sweet as, we had a few drinks, cooked dinner, salmon and roast potatoes, later I heard Dave’s life story… ex-convict who is now straight, some of the stories were a bit hard, but that’s life I suppose.. ..
