It was great to spend a few days in Queenstown. This is by far our favourite town so far. It was quiet (it would be a big party town during snow season), we had great weather (got a little sunburnt), the scenery is great - mountains, water, snow, trees a bit of everything, the food was just a good - lots of restaurants and ice-cream - Patagonia Ice-cream I think I should have brought shares in it as we seemed to gravitate to it every afternoon….
On Saturday we decided to do a leisurely 2.5 hour walk up Queenstown hill. It might be a hill to NZ standards, but not to ours. It basically went straight up the mountain, to a height of about 907M. We were higher than the Gondola that's only about 480M. The views at the top were well worth it but we were stuffed and deserved the Fergburger (Big Al for me) hamburger for lunch. Lets just say we didn't have much for dinner that night (well we had to have another Patagonia ice-cream).
Sunday we went on our Milford sound overnight cruise. The day started wonderfully and they really make it a relaxing journey.
We had plenty of stops for food (our favourite) and some little walks (our 2nd favourite) but by the time we got to Milford sound it had clouded over a little and the drizzle had come in.
I went canoeing and we saw some Fiordland penguins - fantastic - I nearly went in the drink when I first got into the canoe but after a shakey start I was ok.
Menx went Ok on the boat, had to have dinner in the room as the smell of the food and the gentle rocking was playing havoc with her motion sickness. She managed to eat something.
We woke on Monday morning with the sun shining, there was still some low cloud but the rain had stopped and we got to enjoy the sound as best we could - we'll until we reached the Tasman sea, Menx enjoyed her breakfast so much, she had to taste it again…..
Thanks to the rain last night, there are many little waterfalls streaming down the cliff faces. We really enjoyed it and think this was a highlight of the trip so far. The trip back to Queenstown was just as relaxed
as on the way in and we got to do some more walks before having a restful night.
Today we left Queenstown and drove the scenic way to Dunedin. It was fairly boring drive except for some of the large hills we had to climb - I had to drop down to second and we struggled up at about 25 KM's. I think we saw about 10 cars the whole day….
We realised today, we only have 1 week to go before we are on the plane home next Tuesday, that has made us all the more determined to squeeze as much as we can at the relaxed pace we have been going at.
All the best back home and see many of you in a weeks time.
