The destination for the day was the Catlins. This is the southeast “corner” of the island. It’s roughly 3 hours from Wanaka. I was up fairly early had coffee and breakfast at the backpackers and was on my way. First stop was Cromwell for gas and a look around. Nothing special. On down the road to Clyde and then Alexandra. We had the 4th and 5th of April off. So Alina, Andre, and I went to The Catlins in Southland. It was amazingly beautiful. The drive down there consisted of green mountains with huge drop offs and sheep as well as rolling green hills that reminded me a little of Petaluma, but with sheep instead of dairy cows. We went to Nugget Point which kind of reminded me of Pt Reyes because of the lighthouse and the coastline. We could see seals in the water and on the rocks, but there was no way down to get any closer. We saw the Purakaunui waterfall in a rain forest. Nibby- Moving on from Dunedin we headed further south to the Catlin Coast. I hadn't travelled here before so it was a new experience for the both of us. The Catlin coast is thriving with wildlife. The first place we stopped off was Surat Bay where we found some massive male sealions chilling on the beach. For ages we wondered what the difference was between NZ fur seals and sealions and now we know! Sealions are so big and the guys have manes which the seals don't have. The weather wasn't the best so we didn't hang around for long. Further along the coast we stopped off at a waterfall which was pretty cool because it had been raining quite a bit. March 5th Well where have we been for a week? we’ve been right down south, where the campsites either haven’t had electricity or internet connection, or we’ve been too tired at the end of busy days to do anything about writing the journal up. We went down to Stewart Island from Bluff. It’s an hour’s ferry trip in catamaran- very bouncy and choppy on the day we went. The weather is still inclined to be rainy and cold. From Stewart Island we got a water taxi To a tiny place called Ulva Island which is a bird sanctuary with no predators. Anna & Charles would have been proud of us - bird spotting away like mad armed with our new binoculars and a decent leaflet to describe the birds, there are self-guided walks around the island. ... read more

hey bloggertjes Eindelijk zijn we op de surfplanken geraakt! in drie woorden, geweldig, vermoeiend en niet gemakkelijk... als surplus kwamen de dolfijnen mee surfen in de golven... je kon van de dolfijnen leren welk de goede golven waren. we kregen dan ook nog eens een persoonlijke dolfijnenshow... ongeloofelijk mooi we hebben ook een nieuwe vriend gemaakt, Sammy de zeeleeuw, die lies gegijzeld had in het winkeltje , die kwam uitrusten op de kampeerplek en waarvan mama dacht dat het een hond was, maar waar poten naartoe waren kon ze niet op antwoorden... in de buurt van de baai was een fosielenwoud van 170 milijoen jaar geleden. hier waren yelow eyed pinguins. schattig om de pinguins te zien rond hoppen over de stenen. geweldig om op zo een kleine plek omgeven te zijn door zoveel verschillende dieren. ... read more

Viernes 16-ene-09 Por mas vueltas que le he dado, no he encontrado forma de hacer la costa sur de la isla si no es con un tour, así que me he apuntado al menos organizado que he encontrado, pero para llegar tengo que coger dos buses y tiene que cuadrar todo, por que salen solo con 5 minutos de la llegada del otro. No cuadra y se retrasan, pero aquí son así de majetes y se esperan para salir hasta que no ha llegado el otro, aunque sean compañías distintas. En el minibus del tour todo el mundo habla español, una pareja de israelitas, una holandesa, un francés, una argentina y hasta dos canarios, así que muy buen rollito, y ademas la mayoría nos quedamos a dormir en el mismo sitio, yo lo haré por ... read more

Our journey of the South Island continued into the Catlins where we stayed in the lovely Curio Bay where we saw the graceful Hector's dolphins in Porpoise Bay and Yellow eyed Penguins returning to nest on the beach which also contained the Petrified forest. The sleepy Otago Peninsula further up along the east coast had a very cornish feel to it. Here we saw more impressive wild life including the Royal Albatross and New Zealand Sealions. The Department of Conservation campsites were a perfect way of exploring the unspoilt and stunning natural beauty of the South Island. One of the highlights of the South Island was a two day kayak and walking trip in the beautiful Abel Tasman National Park.... read more

The Catlins is an area in the South of New Zealand, full of scenic drives, sheep, penguins, sea lions, seals and waterfulls. Our first night in the Catlins, we arrived at Curio Bay at a little backpackers by the sea. No tv, just a radio and a fire - real bliss. We wondered out to the Petrified Forest which is 180 million years old, and saw yellow eyed penguins coming in from the sea. They came on the rocks, one by one, and took their time to walk over all the rocks and make their way to their homes. Really amazing little things. There was also a seal just sleeping in the sun, and then it did a great big power chuck - I think it was trying to get the attention away from the penguins. ... read more

Day 529 (8.9.08) Getting up early enough we had another two additions to the orphaned lambs to help feed before going into Invercargill itself to see what it had to offer. Going into the ‘i site’ we found a great museum attached and spend a good amount of time reading up on some local info - very interesting. As the weather was still a bit iffy we decided against the walk around the town and instead going to the Bluff - the most southerly point (you can access at this time of year). It’s a pretty uninspiring place, especially in the rain, but yet again there was a handy café for some coffee and chips - not that we usually do that obviously! NZ Day 9 We thought we were doing the main tourist route but we found ourselves quite out of the way of the typical tourists Our first stop was at the oldest wooden lighthouse. It was a beautiful sight and view of the ocean but we were a little disappointed that we didn’t see any seals or sea lions dolphins or penguins, which the guidebook said we might see. Our next stop was the infamous Slope Point. The southern most place on the south island of NZ. The description in the guidebook made us think that this was a very popular tourist attraction.
