AKAROA, NEW ZEALAND

I woke up this morning to more heavy fog. I was in Akaroa, my first port on the South Island but getting there was delayed because there was no visibility for the tenders. The fog lifted about 11:00 am and was totally clear about a half hour later. I chose to stay in the small town of Akaroa for the day instead of taking a bus for 50 miles each way to the larger town of Christchurch.

Akaroa is a very pretty place and the shops and restaurants that line the waterfront are all “the best in town”. I did the Citywalkz self tour and had done the whole town in about two hours. I noticed some bed and breakfasts and it might be a nice place to visit for short time if you want to rest.

Interesting fact: New Zealand, the largest dairy exporter, is one of the world’s most productive agricultural nations. New Zealand sheep outnumber humans 15:1.
