So I now give everyone permission to be jealous because I just did the coolest thing I have ever experienced in my life... I went skydiving over Abel Tasman... Yeah, cross that off the list of things I want to do in my lifetime. The area we went over is just amazing; it's just off the ocean in an area of bays, keys, beaches, mountains, valleys, trails, and everything else under the sun. Not to mention we did the 13,000 ft. jump, the highest possible. 60 seconds of freefall, simply amazing. I was terrified the whole day because my group was second to last, so I had to just run around terrified. Eventually we finally got our gear on and I started getting really nervous. I met my "buddy" (my tandem partner) named Evan (a pretty ... read more

We stayed in Nelson for a few days at a hostel, but the highlight was most definitely skydiving. We went from 13,000 ft and had at least a full minute of free falling. The view and the experience in general was incredible!... read more

Drove up North, through Nelson and stopped off at Rabbit Island. This is not really an island but the beach is about 9km long and there are no real developments within a 5 mile radius. The water was calm and I had a good swim. After a couple of hours, we set off again, going further North. At one point we climbed quite high up a mountain/hill and got some good pictures of the view. Eventually we reached the edge of the Abel Tasman park and drove up to the top and stopped off at Pohara in another 'huge' campsite. This is a really good family place and there were lots of Kiwis there from different parts of New Zealand with their families. It was a bit quiet for us though.... read more

Sensational South Island January 24-28 Since we had spent a lot of our first visit to New Zealand (10 years ago) in the South island, we chose to spend more time this trip in the North Island. However, the South Island is probably the more popular destination and there is no end of destinations to choose from. We made Abel Tasman National Park our first stop, always regretting not getting there the last time. The park is in the North West corner of the island and is the smallest National Park in the country. After a three hour drive from the Picton ferry landing with a stop in the pretty seaside town of Nelson to get groceries, we arrived in Marahau in late afternoon. The last 15 km was a hair raising, nausea inducing ride over ... read more

Well...there were no christmas lights, no christmas carols, no snow and now presents. There was beach, beach, and more beach ! There were hills, hills and more hills ! Left on xmas eve and did a 4 day trek up the Abel Tasman, and it was fantastic ! They say easy to moderate trek, but I would say more moderate. Lots of hill climbing, and when packing gear for four days, food, clothes, sleeping gear, tent...etc....those hills get longer and longer by the minute. Of coarse I had a bottle of wine and my friend Mr. Smirnof tag along, to keep me warm in the evenings, so that didn't help the weight on my back, but....priorities ! haha Bark bay was my favorite beach, as when the tide is low, you can walk the rocks on ... read more

I had two days off from work at the restaurant in Takaka this past week and was able to put together a two day backpacking trip to Abel Tasman National Park with my friend Jennie. The track weaves in and out of beaches and bays for about 5 days worth of walking (if you do pretty short days and lots of beach lounging) but we took a water taxi part way up the track and then hiked 4 hours the first day and 8 hours the second day and I felt like we pretty much saw the whole thing. We stayed in a hut so we didnt have to carry a tent and opted for a cold dinner instead of having to carry a stove and a pot so I was happy with my light weight ... read more

Hi everyone..here is the next instalment!, have had an amazing few days travelling round. NZ is such a great place and the van has been a good way of getting to see it all. We've been staying in camper van sites though as they make it a bit more sociable (and have showers and toilets). We travelled up the tropical west coast and stopped in to Franz Josef glacier which was not visible to the human eye due to the dense fog (didnt feel too disappointed as we'd already seen Mount Cook). Went for a few beers in the evening and met an interesting yocal who told us (in detail) about how he'd killed and hung a wild boar that day and complaining about what a hard life they have in NZ. Needless to say we ... read more

This place was great! The only downside was the bad weather on the first day. WHen it rains in NZ it fucking doesn't stop! My Austrian pal Matteas and I hired a kayak and went from Marahau to Bark Bay in about 5 hours. We had time to explore the little coves and although it was raining the mountaind attracted fog and gave the whole place a "Lost World" effect. We camped up for the night despite trying to get into one of the huts. No room and we tried to sneak in but the buggers caught us and escorted us to our tent in the rain. Quite a hard night when its pissing down and blowing a gale. The kayak got picked up by water taxi and than we had a 8 hr trek back ... read more

From Punakaiki we headed to the northern tip of the south island at Farewell Spit (Another place named as a result of the adventures of a certain Captain Cook). Tabs and I had an appointment with two stubborn nags called Mertz and Mickey. OK so they werent so bad, but I am not a horsey person and my mount had a tendency to lurch off suddenly pulling me behind in a cartoon stylee. Tabs enjoyed her ride and we did get to ride on the beach at low tide and through estuary streams which was great fun. We stayed in Abel Tasman three nights, but each night we moved the camper van to a new site, so we could be ready to explore a new area the next day. The second day was a picture perfect ... read more

Being back on the road again, we were determined to be well organised so we were up early in Kaikoura to be ready for the Magic Bus to pick us up and take us to the next stop, Nelson. The two of us sat outside the hostel cursing the bus for being late and half an hour after pick up time we decided to check with reception if they knew where the bus was. They did. It was on its way to Nelson, minus Karen and I. Doh! Not our fault entirely though, the pick up point was different from what our handbook said. Fair enough, the bus driver had told us this but we forgot. Anyway, Kazza phoned Magic Bus, did a bit of giving-off and they paid for us to get another bus. Happy ... read more
