This Blog was lost due to the site crashing so I never got the text back and now months later I cant remember the route... this is all I can remember... Rocked into Nelson and was lucky enough to get talking to some guy that worked for
Club Nelson Backpackers run by the sweetest guy in the world called Kevin...this BIG BIG Old house that I'm sure was built by some Irish guy way back when.... to make Jam or something..... as I said Im trying to remember things here after a few months...anyway bumped into Nik & Geom and
I mentioned I was MAYBE going to do A ONE DAY trek in Abel Taz..... so we decided to chat about it over a box or 2 of wine....... 😉) and apparently this is what was decided...
that the following morning we would surface early to get the 8.30am bus and hike the
3nights & 4 days to Abel...after calling to the food market to stock up on almighty amounts of food...(which in hindsight....was noooo need for) all the heavy stuff like
Abel Tasman Views
South Island, NewZealand KGs of cheese and tins of this and tins of that and boxes of wine here and there..... which all had to be carried by us..... so before I knew it I was no longer doing the one day I had originally planned but was roped into the 4 days... and hiking there with some savage weight on my back aswell....
missed our bus over the hang over so started hitching and got a lift from a camper van allt he way to the starting point which I cant remember off hand what the name of that was and off we set along the boardwalk to ...HELL... for me anyway..I must have been carrying 15 KG and the guys 19 Id say..it was torture.... sorry I will try not to go on about how hard it was .....
Besides the weight of what we were carryingt he scenery and views were spectactular...over whelming...the pictures speak for themselves.... alass I was always the one behind but never for long as Geom and Nik were such gentlemen they waited at every corner for me to catch up....
We had some mighty laughs along the way, one hike I will
Abel Tasman
South Island NewZealand
never forget because of the company!! Dont think I have ever laughed as much.. anyway long story short, came to the 1st hut we had booked at night fall.... no electricity...all very basic but nice, the stars were out by the billions...we stood there on the beach in pitch darkness naming what we could from the Southern Star, to the Milky way etc etc....
Day 2 Think we started at 6am the next morning and got the tide times wrong so had to cross the ICE cold waters in our underwear or hike around which was an extra 2 hrs so in we went... (ain't no way I was trekking another 2 hrs with 15 kg on my back)
Night time was falling fast and it was a hell of a hike....I wasnt taking much notice of signs by 5 O clock I presumed we were near as we were hiking aaaaaallll daaay long and it was getting dark...so I caught up to the guys and noticed they were looking at a sign and tried to hide it from me.....it said another 3 hrs to the hut we were staying in.........WEEEELL I nearly cracked up and threw the
Three set off for Abel Tasman
Marahau - Abel Tasman - South Island NewZealand bag on the ground in protest!!!! LOL!!!
All good fun really... even longer story short I bailed out on day 3 - nearly end of Day three I may add.... I just couldnt hack the heavy rucksack and ordered a water taxi...best 30 dollars I ever spent..Made it back to Club Nelson back packers to be greeted by Kevin and Sole..... never happier to see my hostel and bed....
The guys being such lunatics ended up spending night 3 in the hut we had organised....slept for 4 hours and got up at 3am and hiked the 3 days back to base in 12 hrs in the pitch datrk!!!! was it even possible I ask you...... but it was and I never heard of anyone that did that in the dark of night....see what I was hiking with... lunatics... 😉)
So when they finally arrived back I had a good ole Irish dinner ready for them and a few boxes of wine and we sat there all night talking and laughing and promised to stay in touch when we parted ways.
Next Day I left on the bus to Hokatika via Punakiki Pankcake rocks...pictures below.
