Gaynor (the Fairy Godmother) and Greg’s Scenic tour of New Zealand
Kiaora….it’s night 4 of our tour and we have been enjoying both the scenery and the experiences of the North Island of New Zealand. We started off by being welcomed to the Langham in New Zealand for two nights and hey… what a great way to start a tour. The old girl is a bit tired and having a rehab, but she is still a beautiful hotel…with stunning chandeliers. Picture 1Our first choice of tour options were based around Auckland harbour. I took a harbour cruise with about half of the others on our tour… There are 37 of us… a mixed group of Aussies, Pommies and a lovely couple from Quebec Canada (French speaking)… this tour was peaceful and enjoyable... but I have seen better harbours. Greg however, took up the “man an America’s Cup Yacht for .5 hours”. He had a great time…winding the sails, steering the yach etc. This was a blast apparently and he loved every minute of it… I was able to take a picture of his yacht as it zipped past our tour
boat. Picture 2
Yesterday we travelled (by bus) to Omapere, visiting a Kauri Museam and one of the last 2 % of live Kauri trees left in NZ… the mighty Tane Mahutu… then onto our hotel on Hokianga Harbour (where many of the first Maori set foot in New Zealand. This place is one of the most tranquil I have been to in all our travels… it just makes you feel good.Side bar: is that we learnt to take panoramic photos on my Ipad… which you may get sick of by the end of this series of blogs but hey… the scenery is so beautiful… Picture 3
Today is the Bay of Islands and the town of Russell (the first ever capital of NZ…. hard to really believe… this town is small). We had a lunch cruise around the bay, with a fun crew – a Kiwi, a Scot and a Yank…from Oklahoma Y’all. The food, all cooked at the open air kitchen at the back of the boat, was great…. we finished off doing a walking tour of Russell, where in a
coffee shop over tea and (really good) coffee cake…. Greg picked up a group of yanks (well I started it by feeding coffee cake to one of them who wanted to know if it tasted good)…but the upshot is he has an address and a contact in Minnesota to watch baseball with…honesty the man cannot help himself. We spend tonight in Pahia in the bay of Island surrounded by more beautiful scenery that was crying out for a panoramic picture… so here it is… Picture 4.
Tomorrow we are off to Cape Reinga at the Northern most point of NZ for a barbeque on the beach.. and if we are lucky, photos of Greg surfing the sand dunes.
