The Fairy Godmother - Travelling about

Update: Traveling again with the lovely Greg and once again a 3 week trip has expanded to a bigger than Ben Hur Trip. Keep up with me on my travels and if you feel like it, read some of my old blogs.

This blog is for my Fairy Godchildren (you know who you are), those that want to be my Fairy Godchildren; my children; grandchildren, friends and family. It will bring you anecdotes from the road, how I survive business class and all the updates on Christmas in Europe.

This Blog was originally set up late 2013 when I was travelling with the lovely Greg and visiting London, Edinburgh, Bath, York and Oxford. Then off to Budapest and down the Rhine to visit all the Christmas Markets, finishing off with Paris, there is also a trip to New Zealand thrown in and another trip to USA.

We moved on from California to Arizona so that we could take in an Arizona Diamondbacks game in Pheonix. We stayed out at Scottsdale, which is a satellite town to Pheonix. We were so happy to find a clean modern hotel in the 3 palms at Scottsdale, great room and wonderful sleep. We visited Old Town Scottsdale, is set out like an old western town. I am not sure which buildings (except the old Mission church) are authentic, and which are reproductions but the town has a nice feel to it. We also went into Pheonix to watch a Diamondback game at Chase Stadium, had a great night but the Hot Dog score was only 4. But I did find a new food phenominum called "The Churro Hotdog" whic was amazing, but really needs to be ... read more

We set off on the 6am Virgin flight from Melbourne via Brisbane to LA flying Virgin comfortably, with Virgin Pyjamas, champagne and tasty food. Highlight was four hostesses singing Happy Birthday to Greg and presenting him with a bottle of champagne (win for me, eh girls). arrived in LA at 7am the same day we had left, giving Greg a 37 hour birthday. With bad things happening in threes we thought we were safe with 1. me nearly leaving my handbag on a train, then 2. Greg leaving the bag with the tickets, passports etc at the Arbory, the bar along the Yarra where Owen works (luckily some nice person handed it in and we were able to retrieve it), and 3. my glasses breaking in half on the flight over.. so imagine...I'm on holiday, and ... read more

Gaynor (the Fairy Godmother) and Greg’s Scenic tour of New Zealand Kiaora….it’s night 4 of our tour and we have been enjoying both the scenery and the experiences of the North Island of New Zealand. We started off by being welcomed to the Langham in New Zealand for two nights and hey… what a great way to start a tour. The old girl is a bit tired and having a rehab, but she is still a beautiful hotel…with stunning chandeliers. Picture 1Our first choice of tour options were based around Auckland harbour. I took a harbour cruise with about half of the others on our tour… There are 37 of us… a mixed group of Aussies, Pommies and a lovely couple from Quebec Canada (French speaking)… ... read more

2015 appears to be the year of both travelling and weddings... with one wedding down in lovely Sorrento Victoria with Mel and Mick... Greg and I are now off travelling to New Zealand... hitting in the North Island: Auckland, Omapere, Bay of Islands, Rotorua (with gas masks ready), the lovely Art Deco town that is Napier and Wellington, we then move onto the South Island where we will visit Picton, Blenheim, Kaikoura, Christchurch, Mt Cooke Moeraki Boulders, Denedin, Invercargill, Bluff, Te Anau, Milford Sound, Queenstown, Haast River, Franz Josef, Arthurs Pass and Picton.... not necessarily in that order. We will travel by air, boat, tram, train and coach. I will be attempting to drink champagne in as many places I can, whilst Greg will be checking out the wine vintages and the beer. Gutten Tag Greetings from Vienna. We are on day 4 of our cruise and are seriously drinking and eating our way down the river. I have cut myself down to toast for breakfast, a small lunch and then dinner. There is so much food on this boat and you could seriously eat all day and night if you want to. Budapest Christmas Markets There were two markets in Budapest to explore one at St Istvan’s Church (St Stephen to us) and on in the town square. I managed to purchase some lovely decorations for the tree. The market was a mixture of both Hungarian food and Hungarian craft. Greg and I puttered round at night and managed to sample Gluh Wien, a huge pretzel and a 12” diameter potato Rosti. I managed to purchase a few ... read more

Europe » Hungary » Central Hungary » Budapest » Pest November 29th 2013

Hello all..... sorry I have been so slack, but I have been having a great time drinking champagne in the air and around Europe... I have tried 5 so far and think that Bollinger is the front runner for favourite at the moment (others are Chandon, Laurent Perrier, Pommery and Marquis de la Tour). I left you last in Bath and so far have also visited Edinburgh, York, Oxford (for Lunch with Uncle Ray) and back to London.... I am writing this from my hotel in Budapest (Buda on one side of the Danube and Pest on the other) The hotel is actually in Pest, but we looked at both sides this morning. With regard to the other towns I have visited... I am going to send you to Greg's blog (His blog name is being ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » North Yorkshire » York November 24th 2013

Have been a bit quiet over the past few days as we have been busy travelling around England and catching up with family and Friends. Our phones or rather our sim cards have given up the ghost and we are not happy with the Woolworths responses to our requests for help...they keep asking us to call them but when your phone is not working at all...it is very difficult to call them. Harrow.. We had a great time with Aunty Gaynor (my mum's baby sister) at the retirement village, got to see most of my old haunts and to catch up with my cousins and their wives at a lovely little Italian restaurant called Sambuccas. Gaynor spoiled us thoroughly and it was really good to catch up. Got in some shopping in Watford, we went by ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London » Harrow November 19th 2013

Arrived in England 40 Minutes early after travelling for almost 2 days. It was definitely a long time since I woke up at 6am in Sorrento Victoria on 17/11 Aus time after a great girls weekend, until I went to bed at 8pm on 18/11 in England. Got the tube to my Aunts Place and am now sitting here in South Harrow (Harrow if you are posh and 'arro if you are cockney), one tube station away from where I grew up in Rayner's Lane. We are staying right next to South Harrow market where I used to go spend my hard earned pocket money on a new 'single' by the Beatles or even Deep Purple. I still have these singles at home. For the younger of you a single was a 45 RPM (revs per ... read more

Twas the weekend before travel and all through the house, not even a mouse...... NOT!!!!! There is cleaning, packing, washing, folding, shopping and panicking happening around here as we move rapidly towards our new adventure. Greg is so excited about travelling business class and I am getting very excited about Europe before Christmas, all the lights, decorations etc that I remember from my childhood and of course the Christmas Markets. I have hand made about 50 Christmas cards so I can be ready to send out my cards on the 1st December... where ever I am... but as usual, when it is card sending time... I have lost the address book. Heaven help me. Tonight we carried on a tradition (a bit early I know) of getting the boys to decorate their own Christmas tree, and ... read more
