On the way from Wanganui to Raetahi, travelling along the River Road, you will find the historic Kawana Flourmill. There is a small signpost at the gate but if you blink you will drive right past it so watch out for it on your left. The actual address is 4075 Whanganui River Road, Matahiwi 4576 but as there is little or no cellphone reception along that road, you may find your GPS doesn't work.

You can park beside the sign and then stroll down the path to the flourmill, waterwheel and house. The mill is open and is definitely worth a visit. Why not stop and introduce the kids to some history they can actually see and touch.

There is a special 'treat' for the unwary or the overseas visitors. Follow the sign that says 'Toilet.' You will go through a gate and down a path that makes you wonder where it will end. Then you will come round a bend and see it - the famous NZ long-drop. It is worth the walk just to have a look at it if you have never seen one before. If you think you may need to use it, I suggest you grab some tissues from your car before heading down there.
