Porirua - Adrenalin Forest
Samuel on the first course To start the day off, we tried connecting to the internet. We got a connection but it was very slow. Trying to post a daily travel blog with photos is extremely difficult to do in NZ! After a while we gave up because it was eating up too much time.
We drove into Porirua to go to the Adrenelin Forest. This is where they have a multilevel aerial obstacle course. Samuel was only tall enough to do course 1 and 2, but Elizabeth could do as many as she wanted. Neil, Elizabeth and Samuel all took to the trees, while I stayed on the ground to be photographer. Each participant is responsible for their own safety and must keep themselves attached to the wires at all times using two carabiners to do so. Samuel loved it! He was so disappointed that he couldn’t go on to course 3. Neil enjoyed the first couple of courses but after that he found it difficult and at times terrifying. Elizabeth, like Samuel, loved it too. She found it too challenging to complete all the courses on her first try though. Still, she was up in the trees for at least three hours.
By the time we were done there, it was too late in the day to make our way in to Wellington to the Weta Cave and to Zealandia. We decided to go to Staglands as we had seen a sign for it on the way to Porirua. Little did we know, that was a big mistake! When we turned off the main road, we had to travel up and over a mountain on a road that was just the width of our campervan! Believe it or not, this road is supposed to be for two way traffic. To make it even worse, this road twisted and turned all the way up and down with the turns being hairpin ones. Some areas had steep drops down the mountain side on the edge of this extremely narrow road. This road was so narrow, there was no centre line. If there had been one, it would have looked like two bike trails. Unfortunately for us, once we started on this road, we couldn’t go back because turning was not possible. I was too petrified to take my eyes of the road to take a photo of the driving conditions. We eventually made it
to Staglands but they were about to close so we didn’t even get to go inside. We continued driving down the mountain not daring to go back the way we came. It was almost just as bad as the way we came. Can you believe this… on this road full of blind corners and wide enough for only one vehicle, the speed limit varied between 50kph, and 70kph!! Elizabeth and Samuel were unaware of all the drama Neil and I had been experiencing because they had been so engrossed in their games.
By the time we exited this nightmare of a road, Neil and I needed to recoup to regain our nerves back before we could drive any further. A perfect stopping point was Fisherman’s Table in Paekakariki, where we could eat and enjoy beautiful views over the ocean.
