Rotorua, New Zealand to
Taupo, New Zealand Per the Contiki brochure: "What a day for your travel diary, along the steaming Wairakei Valley to the raging Huka Falls before continuing to our exclusive resort beside New Zealand's largest lake - Taupo. This afternoon you're free to wander the shops, enjoy a jet boat ride with Huka Jet or challenge gravity on the Rock 'n' Ropes. Tonight maybe try fishing and later enjoy the famous local nightlife."
So, I'm working off of pictures and the Contiki brochure for the rest of the New Zealand updates. I'm sure much hilarity has been forgotten. I do remember us stopping at
Huka Falls because not only did I take pictures, but because the falls looked more like roaring rapids- I didn't see any "falls". Maybe they were around the bend.
The bus dropped some of us off in Taupo (others had excursions) and we spent a few hours going thru Op Shops which is their second hand stores. Our mission: Find cheap outfits for the boat party that night and the theme was "School or Rock". Of course, it took Emmo repeating it about 500 times before I could
understand what he was saying, thought he kept saying "School of Rock" and I was trying to think of a Jack Black outfit. I found a t-shirt whose irony amused me and I bought it. The shirt read "Rehab is for quitters". And you all know how much I drink... and do drugs. Perhaps it's a Cadbury Rehab that I need? Anywho, bought a few other trinkets (fake tattoos and a skull bracelet thing that i turned into a necklace) and then the bus stopped back by town to pick up those of us who were shopped out. Alex and I headed back to the hotel (
Lakeland of Taupo) and we ended up crashing by the pool for about an hour. So, a nice relaxing day.
That night, we get tarted/rocker'ed/school'ed up. My look ends up resembling a biker chick who longs for the days of Bret Michaels and Poison. We hop on the bus, get to our tour boat and we take off onto Lake Taupo. Emmo has recreated Kiss with other guys in the group who are actually in bands. Boys do love drag, whether they admit it or not. And you all know how guys in drag make
me smile, so a good night was had by all. The boat ride consisted of dinner, drinks and dancing (I did the white man side step for 2 songs, go me!) Afterwards, Contiki attacked the town of Taupo but about 7 of us were ready to call it a night and took a taxi home. Alex, Danni and myself were sharing a room and we were about ready to turn off the lights when there was a knock on the door. It was Mikey (our driver) saying we needed to keep it down. My anger gauge quickly neared 11 because we weren't making any noise but then it dawned on us that he was joking and just wanted to say howdy. A drunken howdy. He decided Alex needed help brushing her curly hair (it was frizzy by the time he was done with one section) and then proceeded to braid it. Mind you, he was doing all of this in his costume for the night- dress shirt, tie, shoes, socks. No pants. Not sure if it was rocker or school, but it was Mikey. As Alex was cringing and trying to politely tell him to go away, Mikey was telling
us about how he used to brush his sisters hair... and they hated it. So nice that he decided to continue the tradition. 😊 He then took a quick 2 minute snooze and was up and out the door. (Jumping ahead to the next morning he says he wasn't that drunk, that he was playing it up. For some reason, though, he doesn't remember me taking pictures and a bright flash going off in his face 😊
