We started in the south and we are moving north, and it's the last regios of NZ: Northland. North of Auckland, in a long and narrow land, a region rich in towns, forests of the huge Kauri trees, sand dunes (some of real white sand), bays with many islands (did you know? to be called an island it needs to have some vegetation. Otherwise it’s just a rock), and the northernmost point of the North Island. It’s the other side of the visit to Southland and the Catlins, about 7 weeks ago. If the Catlins were the end of NZ road atlas, now we mead to page 1 in the book… On Wednesday we spent half day in Auckland, mainly shopping souvenirs at Victoria market, and stayed with a HIT family just north of Auckland. After some initial work to the van, we decided to test it out properly and head north... Parakai A short drive north we decided to stop at the thermal pools of a small village called Parakai. We pretty much enjoyed the afternoon and the heated pools before heading up north the next day... Dargaville and North to the Kauri forests We shared the driving this day, heading north from Parakai and up through a town called Dargaville (seemed nice enough but was cut off from the internet so we headed on). Our goal was the Waipoua Kauri tree forests which we arrived at, had a quick look from the lookout and then proceded to the DOC (Dept. of Conservation) campsite nearby and had a picnic on the grass. Later we went into the forest to look ... read more

Oh my head, what the hell happened last night and why am I singing 'Sunshine on Leith'? Fiona is even worse and that thought of the Ferry to Russell is not an appealing one. We have breakfast and make a pack-lunch and set off for the ferry, we get to the ferry port about 10 minutes after breakfast and sit down to eat our pack-luch, it's nearly noon anyway..... The ferry to Russell is about 15 minutes too long, it took about 17 minutes and Fiona (the ultimate traveller) was feeling a bit worse for wear, we got there and walked along the shore to the beach, Fiona lay down in the sun and I climbed some rocks then went for a dip in the water. Russell is famous for being New Zealand's first capital but ... read more

We woke up bright and early and had breakfast in the hostel, neither of us were quite sure how we got to bed last night and why we were still fully clothed but after a cold shower we were ready for another journey. We were going to Waitangi today and the treaty grounds where the nation was born, it was a lot closer than we though and were there in half and hour, we weren't quite ready to go in yet so decided to keep on driving and catch Waitangi on the way home. We headed on through Kerikeri and Kawakawa and up the coast towards Cape Reinga, we stopped for lunch at Bledisloe Point then walked along the beach at Kawakawa. The beaches here are so different from Hawai'i, they go on for ever and ... read more

We got picked up at 10am and taken to the car rental place to pick up our car, it's a great day and after a wee check over for scratches and that we're on our way to the Bay of Islands in Northland, the top of New Zealand. We have 3 different maps and they all say Paihia is 270 KM from Auckland but they all give different estinates for time, the AA goes with 7 hours and our hostel sugests 3.5 hours, we were slightly more than the ACE car rental map (4.5 hours) and done it in 5, however we did have busy traffic leaving Auckland and stopped for lunch along the way. The drive up was amazing, stunning scenery and a clear blue sky, it was roasting so the air-con took a fair ... read more

After a night in the flat doing washing and re-packing our bag we were up early on Hogmanay to catch the bus to the Bay of Islands. We had been up there in September, not thinking we’d be spending New Year in the same place, but that was where we found a holiday house (in a place called Opua, outside of Paihia, the main town in the Bay) and it’s a lovely place to visit. Joining us at the house were David and Lindsey, Cat and Rob (whose house we had Christmas at), Alex and Sara (friends of Lindsey’s from the UK, who are here on holiday) and Kenny. Unfortunately Luke had too much work to do to join us (he’s doing a long distance degree as well as working full time), and we missed him ... read more

We're just back from a great weekend in the Bay of Islands, in the north of New Zealand. We went with Magic, a company that specialises in backpacker tours and covers the whole country, and takes you to places that you might not find if you were to drive yourself. On the way to Paihia (the town we were staying in) we went up the west coast of Northland, through forests and past lovely beaches on the Tasman Sea. We stopped to visit Tane Mahuta, the biggest tree in New Zealand (it's massive!). It was a long drive up the west coast, but we finally got to Paihia at about 4.30 (having left Auckland at 8 in the morning...) The next day was an early start as we were going to Cape Reinga, the most northerly ... read more

I really enjoyed sea-kayaking when I tried it in Canada last year - so I was looking forward to having another go here in N.Z.  Although last time I was in a tandem kayak with the instructor doing most of the work.  This time in Paihia the guide said I should try a single kayak - the main difference would be I would be in control of steering aswell as the paddling. I got paddling and the steering was quite tricky(possibly it as adjusted properly for my short legs)  - I just seemed to be going zig-zag the whole time making alot more work for myself.  It wa hard work and the sea despite being in a sheltered bay was quite choppy.  We headed out towards an island, the guide said I was doing well so he decided ... read more

As I am sitting here I seem to be getting eaten alive by little black flies that don't even have the decency to inject a chemical so I don't feel it! I am a bit stuck for words at the minute so this won't be a long entry and I have left my written journal back at the hostel so I will fill in a log about the trip to Dubai later in the week. I am feeling a little dodgy, I went on this 40knott jet boat ride out to see 'the hole in the rock' it was 17miles out to sea.  I sat at the front originally which was very bumpy, Dad and his back problems came to mind I could almost feel the discs in my back smashing together each time we went over a wave ... read more

Hey peepz, how's the lovely English winter treating you all? Had any snow? ... if you have then just think of us in our shorts 'n' tshirts basking in 28+ sun walking across sun bleached white sand, kayaking(for free!) across cyan blue sea's, aaaaah, what a life!:o) Well, Christmas went by without much notice from most of us at the backpackers, me and dina had a few drinks and chatted most of the night, well I had a few too many and spent most of New Years day spewing into the twalette, i didn't get out of bed until 7pm that evening!:o) We decided to go up to pretty much the top of NZ, in the Northland, a place called Pukenui, to do some Mandarin thinning. Off we went on Jan 4th and spent the best ... read more
