Breakfast was interrupted by a phone call from Jen’s Mum saying that Jen’s Dad Ray had been rushed to hospital after a possible heart attack. This of course meant that we considered heading home a month early. A later phone call was a bit more encouraging so we decided to continue with a journey pending any developments. We therefore headed south as planned. We waved off the Austrailian contingent on their bus - even getting a hug from Julie. The unexpected events meant that we left later than anticipated, and we had a tight schedule for all the things we wanted to do, so I forgot that the car ferry between Kohukohu and Rawene we had to catch leaves the north shore on the hour. The winding road passed through georgeous valleys as I raced ... read more

As we awoke the rain crashed down noisily and we feared our day would be a washout. It eased slightly by the time we wandered a hundred metres from our hostel and joined the day coach trip with our driver Dennis and 7 others including two small children for a journey to the northern tip of the Aupori Peninsular and back along ninety mile beach. Our driver Dennis who was Maori was a bit of a wag and regaled us with tales and also some songs in Maori. After a stop at the Ancient Kauri Kingdom which is really a shop selling Kauri wood associated items we headed a few miles to the Gumdiggers park which was a surprisingly good stop. We were shown around by a wonderful guy who has preserved an interesting part ... read more

Leaving Paihia travelling north the roads become more deserted and the landscape even less populated. We descended to a bleak bay with many trailer homes (each with at least one abandoned car - or in some cases an old wreck of a bus). We passed some fields of emus. We passed remote and atmospheric small places on lovely bays. Highlight was a cafe stop at the Old Saddlery in Kaeo. Eventually we arrived at the workaday town of Kaitaia. The rain poured down as I went out for a newspaper and supplies. The hostel was friendly. A group of Australian teenagers were staying but they were well behaved and supervised and made the place lively. ... read more

A superb day. We joined a small number ot others for a day trip into the Bay Of Islands on a large catamaran. The weather smiled on us. For fun, I helped haul the mainsail which was hard work. It was georgous sailing through the bay. We stopped at a lovely island where we were ferried ashore by inflatable. A walk to the viewpoint at the top of the island gave us splendid vistas over the bays many islands. In the distance we could see leaping dolphins playing beside pleasure boats. Soon after leaving the island the dolphins joined us briefly and porpoised by our boat. At a lunch stop anchored by a beach I went snorkelling in the cold but crystal clear water. Jen took to a kayak and paddled to me. It was ... read more

The weather was really sunny and warm - at total odds with the previous evening forecast, which had shown clouds and heavy showers all day. After leaving the hostel, we drove to the museum on the main street. Waipu has an interesting history. A group of Scottish Highlanders impoverished by the highland clearances emigrated to Nova Scotia under the leadership of a independent minded minister. The going was tough and on the information of the ministers son some of them built a ship and sailed it to Australia - their arrival coincided with a goldrush and the associated lawlessness and immorality which was not what they were expecting, so they moved on to New Zealand (by this time the tough old minister was in his seventies). They founded a settlement and the most of the ... read more

Scott has kindly lent us his car. So after dropping off the rental one in Auckland we headed towards Northland. We stopped at a lovely cafe in the historic little village of Puhoi where in the garden a hen and her chicks pecked around near our feet whilst we enjoyed a cream tea. The village was founded by immigrants from Bohemia. We stopped at Warksworth and popped in on Jen's cousin Derek, who she had seen only once in the last thirty years. Fortunately he had been forewarned that we might turn up on his doorstep. We had a nice chat over a cup of coffee in his sunny garden. On leaving Warksworth we did a 10 minute stroll around a pleasant waterfall on the outskirts The roads along the coast became increasingly windy and ... read more

As a contrast to our adrenaline packed week, we were looking forward to spending some time up in the Bay of Plenty. We passed through kiwi country, (fruit not birds) and the large city of Tauranga would be our base. This is a pleasant enough town with a large port and a fairly attractive waterfront. However as our hostel was full of fruit pickers who didn't really care about anyone else it was quite scruffy and noisy. Someone even had the cheek to steal our giant pot of unopened yogurt, resulting in a somewhat unhappy Laura. Whilst in Tauranga we hired two very shabby bikes to cycle to the seaside town of Mount Maunganui. The beach was gorgeous so most of the day was spent here building up a big collection seashells. Even though there ... read more

We were up EARLY the next morning because we needed to go meet our "Sand Safari" Bus that was going to be taking us on our tour for the day. First stop after boarding the bus was at the Giant Kauri Kingdom. Kauri trees are some of the oldes in the world. They make some of the Redwood Forests look very very young. Some of the trees that they are uncovering are around 45, 000 years old. A lot of the oldest Kauri forests need to be uncovered because the are so old that they are far below the surface and need to be dug out like fossils. We went to an old gumdiggers park, where gum digging used to be a very popular industry. In the park they are in the process of uncovering ... read more

Final leg of my little tour was Tauranga/ Mt Maunganui . I didn’t really do much there apart from lounge on the beach and read a few books. Riveting stuff ehh. By the way Bill Clinton: my life, $14 can’t go wrong. Anyone who can find a book with a better price per page e-mail me. On the Friday I shot back up to Auckland for the night to watch the Blues Vs Warratahs in rugby at Eden park, $25 (9 pounds) for the ticket and 2 free pints. Not bad at all. I arrived back in Kerikeri last Saturday in preparation for my 1st shift at orangewood pack house. (Home until end of May I think) I decided against hitching this time. From experience you can come upon some strange people in this part ... read more

Geo: -35.2821, 174.091It's evening now, about 7:31 PM and my last entry was this morning from Mangonui; I had been attaching more pictures when the power went out due to the rain. Here's how the day progressed: We drove to Cape Reinga--the place we were most looking forward to on this vacation, but especially me... The rain was horizontal and we were geared from head to sandaled-foot in rain gear as we ran down the path toward the much-anticipated lighthouse at the tip of the island. When we were standing right beneath it we could barely see its top for all the fog and we couldn't even hear the waves below for all the wind--driving at us like Mack trucks. So much for the picturesque seam of teal where the two massive bodies of water meet. ... read more
