Dawn broke just before 7AM along the Port in Auckland. The hustle of the streets below was muted from our 12th floor room. Life slowly crept out of the bedrooms of the apartment. We formulated a plan to head up to our next destination of Russell, a small island town in the Northland region. We fired up our newly acquired GPS, christened "Gertrude" by Ivy. With the aid of our Australian-accented electronic dame, we would be able to navigate New Zealand with ease. We set our sites on the Goat Island Marine Reserve, about an hour north along the Hibiscus Coastal Scenic Drive. The Reserve was the first of its kind, established in 1975 to protect and preserve a region of coastline and about 1500 hectares of the Pacific Ocean. We arrived without incident and surveyed ... read more

6th - 8th December 2008 Goat Island When we arrived at Leigh and Goat Island, we went straight down to the beach. Walking on the rocks, we could see loads of beautiful fish swimming around really close to us. It's a major snorkeling and diving marine reserve here, so we were really excited about the following day and getting right in there to see all the marine life. Our campsite was very hippyish, but great. The lady running it was away with the fairies (man!) but there was a great feel t the place - maybe because of that??! The next day was lovely and hot, but the sea was really rough. We tried to snorkel but the visibility was nil, so we gave up and played around in the surf instead with the bodyboard. ... read more

Hi folks. We've done a bit of riding about in the last few days. One trip was to a place North of Auckland, called Makatana, which was a little town with some interesting shops and cafes, including another expensive shoe shop which we just couldn't resist, well one of us couldn't. There was also a pleasant river walk, surrounded by tropical vegetation. From there, onto Goat Island, which is rumoured to be one of Natalie's favourite spots. It's a big snorkelling place, but when we arrived, everyone seemed to be leaving. Perhaps they knew something we didn't? They sure did! I had time to take a couple of pretty pictures, before noticing that one of the small islands you could see had disappeared. There were no illusionists around, but we realised too late what was happening, ... read more

Mercredi, on a pris ça relaxe.

Well all, Did shitloads on wednesday. I went to the Museum then in to the city, did a reverse bungie then went up to the top of the sky tower and decided to jump off. With harnesses 192metres. After that I went to the casino and lost $40 in five minutes. The sky jump was terrifying but good fun, some adrenalin buzz. It wasn't a bungie but I didn't really want it to be off the tallest building in the southern hemisphere. I have photos and videos. Yesterday meself and podger went to Omaha beach north of Auckland and went surfing all day. Great fun but even factor 35 didnt save me from 5 hours in the sun. Gorgeous warm water though. I got toasted alive and last night was a painful nights sleep. John... read more

A long journey today from Waitomo up past Auckland and its' motorways and into Northland. Stopped off at the pretty historic village of Puhoi, with its' Roman Catholic Church, rolling hills, and wild Lilies. The village was settled in 1863 by people from villages in Bohemia, attracted by offers of free land. We next headed to Tawharanui Peninsula and Anchor Bay. This nature reserve is fenced off to prevent introduced predators, (such as stoats & possums etc) entering the site. This has created an oasis for birdlife, and we spotted a few wild parrots flying around the phormiums. This piece of coastline offered fantastic views, and a great camping site for summer, (as no powered sites, but beach views). After waiting for a few sheep crossing the gravel road, we went on our way to the ... read more
