I was getting antsy with 2 weekends in a row in Gizzy and needed to hit the backcountry big time. Good thing for me, there's always others keen on the same. Charl, Mags, Julie (a couch surfer who had been staying with me since Thursday) and I loaded up the truck with probably more than one night's gear and headed out to the gorge. A treacherous drive, but beautiful scenery, between Gisborne and Opotiki. We hiked the 2.5 hours to the Koranga hut, met some Zimbabwean and young kiwi hunters packing dead pigs on shoulders and deer in their backpacks. A bit too hard core for the tinned-salmon likes of us... You definitely couldn't be mistaken that you were in New Zealand, with the carcasses everywhere, sheep paddocks, massive Remu trees, immaculate hut (inhabited by full ... read more

Hello all! It has been a few days because the last hostel we stayed at had dial up internet and charged $2 for 15min, so to save myself a day's worth of food I decided not to update :) We are continuing to have a spectacular time here and really enjoyed the last town we were in. After we left Rotorua we drove further east along the coast and arrived in Whakatane. Which is pronounced fa-ka-ta-ne. I know. I would never have guessed either. We got in pretty early, so we drove a little farther east to relax on a beach and read a while. Finally we got authentic New Zealand food! Fish and Chips! I'm getting hungry just thinking about them. As you have read we have been eating PB&J, A LOT, and have ... read more

Well, here we are in the middle of nowhere having spent the afternoon on a glorious deserted beach, trying to motivate myself to do my diary! Things are proving a bit different in New Zealand and one such thing is the lack of facilities to be able to put my photos on to disc myself or add them to the diary. There is no shortage of internet cafes but they are all kiosk type with no connections/printers etc, hence the reason there are no photos with this blog, but I will try at a later date to put some on! As i said, things are a little different here. We had to pay twice as much for the campervan as in Australia because it is more or less high season which takes a fair chunk from ... read more

Opotiki to Gisborne Firstly, a word of apology about the photos appearing as they do. Don't ask me why but it is impossible to sort them properly so they appear in the wrong entry. Sort it out yourself I suppose and guess where they are meant to go. Then we got to Opotoki from where we did a full day's cycling in good weather to Maraetai Bay. The hostel here was great, right on the beach a sprawling wooden construction with outdoor fire. It was run by a generous spirited and enthusiastic Maori guy and son. It was tempting to stay another few nights to dive and chill but instead off at the crack of dawn to Hicks Bay. We were drenched a few times on this one and went on to the Kawakawa Hotel in ... read more

Stayed at Steve’s Beachhouse Backpackers. The Beachhouse Backpackers is about 2 miles out of the small town of Opotiki, Steve had in his time travelled the world from his home in Auckland, returned after 5 years and asked where the best climate in New Zealand could be found - the east cape. The weather for me was good, and I enjoyed a walk along the beach, a wander through the town and relaxed for the evening. The Budget Backpacker Hostels network or the BBH is a group of independent hostels that are rated and listed in a book. Holding a BBH card entitles the bearer to a guaranteed price, in my experience the hostels that are members of this group tend to be the smaller, friendlier hostels. I purchased a card and set about saving a ... read more
