The Quad
The Quad and field behind us...Diego is to my right (the one I almost had my head chopped off with) Ian to my right, and the hill billy Kiwi on the bike The next day Paihia, I was suppose to meet up with the Holland friends, and they were going to rent a boat for the day to take out themselves....but I slept in and missed them. Bummer! Which turned out to be ok cause it sent me on a path to another adventure.
After reading 'Celestine Prophecy', I have become aware and intrigued as to why I met certain people at the times I do, and what kind of information we may have to share with each other. I think this occurs every day in our lives- but normally we're set on such a schedule that we don't necessarily have time or interest to really talk to people in our passing and hear their stories- which may actually have a lesson or insight for us. But when we travel, we are more open to finding about other people's stories and sharing yours- it's part of traveling- and in doing so I think it is fascinating to observe where the conversation heads with each different person, and who we meet at what points- and just be aware if there is something that you can learn, or inspire from what is shared.
Jesse and his fish...
That he caught and is planning to have for lunch... So anyways...I met some people in my hostel who were living there and working, Ian from England, Jesse from Connecticut, and Diego from Argentina, and they invited me along to another beach out of Pahia with them. So we take off for the beach and about 30 minutes into the drive we get a flat tire. So we pull over and get that changed...and then Ian tries to start the car and his key ignition is locked- like it won't budge at all. So it turned into a day stranded by the side of the road...but it turned out to be a blast. It helped having a case of beers in the back that we had for the beach to sip on. So Ian and I had to hitch hike to find this guy in the next town who knew about cars (who turned out to be 17)...it was AMAZING how helpful people were- it just blew our minds- really going out of their way to help us out.
So while this kid was looking at the car another kid (about 17) drove up on his quad- he lived down the road and seemed to just want to check out what was going on- so he was just chilling around us watching. So for about 10-15 minutes I couldn't stop thinking about how bad I wanted to drive the quad- i never have....and so finally i asked him if I could and he was like- totally. He had a bunch of land right where we were stopped, so he let me go onto that and just have a field day! So Diego got on the back of the quad and we took off, first on the street to get to the gate- and I drove on the wrong side of the road for about 45 seconds- until a car started coming- and we swerved to the other side- ha! it wasn't close or anything- dont worry mom- but it was funny how it didn't even cross my mind and then we took it to the fields, and had SO SO much fun.
I was a little reluctant to share this part- but it's such a funny/stupid part of the story- so don't worry too much about it mom and dad....but when we first got on the field I was booking it- about 70 kph (I think about 40 mph) and there was a beautiful view of the ocean in front of us- then all of a sudden Diego started screaming to 'watch out' and before we knew it I drove threw a fence- the ones with the wooden posts and the wire going across....and the wire hit my chest and then just went over us-but the wire was so thin I didn't even see it- luckily it was old and broke right away, otherwise it could've been very bad- but in the moment really really funny- driving through a fence!....I let Diego drive after that!
So the car is broken and needs to be worked on...so we hitched back (3 of us) and this family picks us up- and the daughter in the back was the girl who sold me the dolphin sailing package- and then i saw her out the night before as well- but we didn't talk- so it was so ironic- she recognized me right away- and we thought it was funny how our paths had crossed yet again. Her family was from Scotland- and man oh man- I actually asked her at one point what language her and her mom were speaking to each other- i guess i have never heard a true thick Scottish accent- it was a trip!
So we made it home ok- with smiles on our faces. I cooked some dinner- I made some french fries with a potato (thanks rich 😉 and got made fun of immensely by the 10 Argentinan guys who were staying there...they thought I was silly and didn't know what I was doing...which I didn't- so it was a good time. Another notch on my culinary accomplishments...
So now i'm back in Auckland and planning to head to the south island! With more adventers and stories to come!
