We got up bright and early but I’d had a terrible headache all night and really didn’t feel good. I knew this would happen at some point in the trip - where one of us felt poorly but we still had to carry on with the change over day. I dosed up on migraine relief tablets and got ready for the long day ahead hoping that the headache wouldn’t get any worse as I already felt like being sick. We checked out at 10am and got a surprise of an additional VAT charge on our room (we’d been told about one of the taxes but there were actually two different taxes as well as the VAT!) This added an extra £60 onto the bill which wasn’t good but there wasn’t a lot we could do about ... read more

Now many of you may not understand the impact of the falling value of the US Dollar in the world market...but this past week we had a blast of reality, try a continental breakfast -- $50 for two (no omelettes or waffles; seriously, bread, butter, and fruit and that was it)....... French Polynesia is one of the those places that you must visit at least once in your lifetime. Pictures are of no use...this place is much more beautiful than any picture can show you. The water is more blue, the scenery is more amazing, and the time is SOOOO relaxing. As you would guess on this fast moving trip, travel days are a bear. I have a great picture of Jessica asleep on the floor of the Tahiti airport as we arrived at midnight and ... read more

This was our second attempt at visiting this place, having been completely washed out on our first visit, to take in reputedly the world's most beautiful island. The island has at its centre an extinct volcano that rises to two volcanic peaks Mount Pahia and Mount Otemanu. The highest point is 727 metres (2385 feet). It is surrounded by a fringing reef of coral with many motus (a reef inlet formed by broken coral and sand surrounding an atoll - in other words a very small island) housing an array of luxury resort hotels and an airport. The island was among the smaller ones we have visited (30.55 square kilometres) and takes less than a couple of hours to go all the way around - with stops. The coast road is, for the most part flat ... read more

Bora Bora This is the last of the French Polynesian Islands we will visit. James Michener described it as the world’s most beautiful island. The first impression sailing in to the harbor is really awesome, but I still think Moorea is overall the best. We took a taxi, a mini van, to the famous attraction, Bloody Mary’s, where we had lunch and, of course, a delicious bloody mary. It is the owner and founder upon whom the character Bloody Mary in South Pacific is based. The place is unique, and the drink is indeed good. From there we went out on the long dock and sat looking at the clear, blue waters and the mountain across the bay. Moored in the bay was a beautiful sailing yacht flying an American flag. From there we took a ... read more

It's always been a dream destination of mine...to see Tahiti. Her beautiful Islands lived up to the gorgeous brochures we have all seen and drooled over. But, the sparkling jewel was defintely....Bora Bora. The beauty of this island took my breath away! I visited Papette, Huahine, Moorea....which were all beautiful, but Bora Bora just stands out with it's amazing view. As I landed, and saw the almost black mountains{Mount Otemanu and Mount Pahia}, with the lush emerald greenery and the stunningly gorgeous blue lagoons...no words can describe the beauty. If, I appear to be 'gushing' it's because I am. This is paradise. And paradise does come with a price. Yes, a high price! Over-the-water bungalows start at $500 USD a night. Oh.....but, what a splurge. With glass see-through coffee tables ....you can see schools of fish ... read more

When you’re visiting an island famous for its beautiful lagoon, it would be a crime not to get in the water. And, since Alan and I have hauled our snorkeling gear through airports, around New Zealand and across the Pacific Ocean, we’re determined to use it. So, even though clouds threaten rain, we take the tender to shore and the beginning of our “Stingray Ballet and Snorkel Safari.” We board a covered boat that has two rows of long benches facing each other. Placing our gear underneath the seat, Alan and I wait for fellow cruisers to select from a large bin of fins and masks. Most passengers choose to use the equipment provided by the tour and there is much grumbling and griping about its condition. “Don’t you have any extra-large fins?” one man asks. ... read more

Managed to get ashore at this stop. We were tendered in to Viatape Wharf (Viatape is the main town on this 12 square mile (30.55 sq km island). However, all trips were cancelled as it was tipping it down and continued to do so all day, at least until we were back on the ship when there was a brief respite for about half an hour but then it kicked off again. We were supposed to be going on a 4-wheel drive tour - but ended up swimming to the local shops where we purchased some Christmas presents and a bottle of hot sauce from the general store. A great pity really because as can be seen, this is a truly beautiful island with a textbook geography of a central volcanic island surrounded by a fringing ... read more

Day One: Today we arrived in Bora Bora around 1 PM. The plane ride was short, but scenic. Flying over the island before landing was beautiful! From the airport, we had to take a long ride on a boat taxi to our hotel, the Sofitel Motu. (A motu is like a tiny island separated from the coast of an island by a narrow channel of water) One thing that struck me right away was how hot and humid Bora Bora was compared to Moorea! We splurged on an overwater bungalow. It was great! Spacious, pretty, and private. Plus, from our balcony, we could see the island from all directions...what a view! :) After checking out our room, we headed to the hotel snack bar for lunch. We split a cheeseburger and French fries ($22!). It ... read more
