ADVENTURES IN PARADISE We arrived in Tahiti earlier than schedule which was fortunate because on Saturday everything shuts down around noon. The wharf is right in the heart of downtown which makes it very convenient for exploring this trading town. We always like to go to the Marché de Papeete—the community market—to pick up a bouquet of gorgeous tropical flowers or buy a new pareo—the colorful Tahitian version of a sarong. Along with Tahitian handicrafts, the market has fruits, vegetables, fish, eggs—it’s an all-in-one shopping stop. On the way we passed a group of Tahitian men assembled on a sidewalk, each with a musical instrument, having an islander style hootenanny. One inventive musician was using a plastic water bottle filled with small rocks, giving the music a distinctive beat. We went to their version of Macy’s, ... read more

Novelist James Michener described Bora Bora as “the most beautiful island in the world”, and he used it as the model for his fictitious novel Bali Hai. The coral reef around Bora Bora encloses the stunning lagoon in the Pacific. Every shade of blue from pale aqua to a deep navy blue, arise from the varying depths. The island, with craggy Mt. Otemanu towering above, furnishes the balance of the rainbow. The peak often wears a soft white cloud halo. The land is seven million years old, and depending on which history one feels is accurate, it either arose from an ancient volcano, or the God Ta’aroa created the island with a sweep of his hand. The name of the island, actually Pora Pora in the Polynesian language, means first born. The first European discovery is ... read more

We stayed at Bora Bora Pearl Resort. Arriving in Bora Bora was amazing. We stayed on an overwater bungalow which was awesome! The Pearl is great for snorkeling off your balcony because is has a reef nursery with tons of fish and it has a reef under every bungalow's glass coffee table. At night if you just hang out on your balcony with the lights on the water you can see stingrays and sharks swim by your room! It was incredible. We started the next day early with a 4 hour Land Rover “Safari” around the island. It was beautiful. The roads were narrow, dirt, rock, and really steep. They took us to a view point (really a communications antenna station), to a pearl farm, old WW2 cannons left there by the U.S. and to an ... read more

Hello to everyone and sorry that our 2nd blog took so long to produce! We just got a secure wireless internet account here in New Zealand so that is what the delay has been! Anyway, we were quite sad to leave Moorea as we really fell in love with the island. It's a spectacularly stunning island, with gorgeous sunsets (new pics included) towering mountain peaks, and sparkling clear blue waters! We were able to snorkel right below our bungalow and the amount and variety of fish we saw was amazing. We also did a really fun ATV ride into the mountains, through various citrus orchards..pineapple, papaya, grapefruit, lemon, etc, and on our last weekend there, took in a really interesting native Tiki Village bbq and show, including a traditional fire dance. On to Bora Bora, which ... read more

Tahiti Tahiti equals relaxation, particularly for someone escaping winter in Toronto We arrived early January 5th 2009 and relaxed for the next two days in Papeete before boarding the Paul Gauguin. Todate we have visited Moorea, Bora Bora and today we are visiting Taha’a. Tomorrow we are at sea all day arriving next at Aitutaki in the Cook Islands. Then it is another two days at sea before we arrive at Vavau, Tinga. After another day at sea we reach Fiji stopping at Savusavu and Yasawa. Back to sea for another two days before we arrive at Noumea, New Caledonia. Finally on January 25th we arrive in Brisbane Australia. We have been snorkeling, swimming with sting rays and the occasional shark. Mare was almost instantly back in the boat when the shark paid a visit. I ... read more

BORA BORA There isn’t much I can add to what has been said about this island. It is spectacularly beautiful. Mt. Otemanu dominates the view. There is one pass through the reef and we cruise into the lagoon at noon. The lagoon is a palette of blues and greens. The deep water where we anchor is cobalt blue. Then deep aqua, light aqua, turquoise, baby blue, blue green all the colors and shades of the blue/green colors are there. Our tours were arranged in advance but when we arrived on the dock, we found out that they had been cancelled since I had not responded to their e-mails. I can only guess that their e-mails went into my spam mailbox and I deleted them. Mieva worked her phones (two) and managed to get us on the ... read more

Today is day three aboard the M.V. Clipper Odyssey and it is the first time I have had a moment to write. For those of you who may not know exactly where I am, I am in Polynesia, which is south of Hawaii and east of Australia. Polynesia is named as such because it means many islands. Whereas Micronesia means small and Melanesia means dark (which was derived from the darker looking natives - meaning more melanin in their skin. I learned that little tidbit from Shirley Cambell, one of the lecturers on board who specializes in anthropology. We had three lectures today because we had an entire day at sea - at least that was the original plan. Lucky for us, one of the dive masters Thomas (who leads diving with his wife Natalia - ... read more

I made a mental note of how beautiful the mountain looked in the bright morning sunshine as we walked down for breakfast. Vlad came over and explained to us that he wouldn’t be able to take us directly to the airport motu in his speedboat as it was still too choppy over that part of the island. He’d tried to find someone else with a bigger boat but couldn’t so instead he explained that we’d have to go back directly across to the mainland, then travel around the island by taxi to get to the airport shuttle boat. We spent the morning taking as many pictures and videos of the place to help us remember how beautiful it is. Vlad gave us a large shell to use as a soap dish as a leaving gift. It ... read more

We spent most of the morning using Skype to call our families, then spent some time lying on our sun loungers on the beach. I kept trying to take in the view and make the most of it as we haven’t got long left here. Around lunchtime we headed to the pool to cool off and had some lunch. To walk off some of the food we headed down the jetty to watch the fish, and found a ladder at the bottom. We climbed down expecting it to be deeper water, but it only came up to just above ankle level. The dark blue channel dug out of the mud for the boats was visible so Matt jumped into it, but again it wasn’t as deep as expected and only came up to his waist. We ... read more
