Today I actually managed to drag Matt down for breakfast as I thought we should see what it was like. He decided to just have a coffee as he couldn’t face any food. Breakfast consisted of a basket of bread, jams, cheese, ham, yoghurts, fruit juice and a plate of fresh tropical fruit. It was really tasty but should have been as it cost over £13!
After eating for what felt like at least an hour, I suggested that we take the kayaks out to work off some of the food. This time we decided to use the single canoes rather than the double as yesterday it had been hard work.
We turned left from the beach. The water was lovely and calm. It was much easier using the single canoes and we felt that we were going much further much faster today. At one point Matt pointed to what looked like a ray in the water. I paddled over to try to get a closer look and it started moving. No matter how fast I tried to paddle, I couldn’t keep up with it so I let it go. We had hoped we’d be able to make it
to the tip of the motu but clouds and wind started to come in and the water became choppier again. It wasn’t long before we were drenched and the canoes had quite a bit of water in them so we decided to pull up on the beach to empty them out. The beach was narrow and full of coconut palms. It was completely deserted as we were away from the resorts and the occasional houses that were dotted around the island. The sun came out and we decided it was a lovely spot to lay our towls and have a rest. We waded into the lagoon up to our knees to cool off. Out of the corner of my eye I saw something move in the water. I looked down and saw a big white fish with a yellow fin and pointed face pecking around the floor next to me. It was really close and it seemed completely unaware that I was standing there. Matt rushed out to get the underwater camera while I carried on watching it. It moved around slowly and even though we got close to it, it didn’t swim away. Matt followed it for a while
but unfortunately couldn’t get a good snap of it. Looking at our fishcard later on we think it was a False Eye Toby.
After laying in the sun for a while we decided to head back as the clouds were coming in from the ocean towards us and we thought they’d bring with them more wind. The journey back was easy as the wind was behind us and the waves had stopped lapping over our canoes. We paddled out and enjoyed the scenery. I suggested to Matt that we buy a canoe each when we get home but Matt pointed out that it wouldn’t be the same in the cold water of Fareham quay. I had to agree with him but still think it would be fun.
In front of me I saw a small white fish jump right out of the water over a wave. I was looking to see where he had gone when a stingray swished right past the front of my canoe. I turned to shout to Matt and saw another bigger one in front of his kayak too. They moved so quickly that we had no hope of catching up with them though.
We headed back to Eden Beach happy and contented, and jumped into the swimming pool to cool off. Afterwards we curled up on the deck chairs wrapped in our towels looking at the view and drinking a cold ager. The soundtrack to the film Once played on the stereo and Vlad turned it up for us to enjoy while he went out on his boat leaving us with the run of the place. The other couple of American ladies had gone earlier that day, meaning we now have the whole place to ourselves for the rest of our stay.
It was idyllic and I couldn’t stop smiling as this really is the most beautiful, amazing place I’ve ever been and I definitely intend to come back here again sometime in the future. But for now I just want to enjoy the days we have left here and make the most of every second.
When Vlad came back he went to cook us lunch while we drank some more lager. I had a massive plate of spaghetti bolognaise as that was the plate of the day and Matt had asked for more of the white tuna he’d had
yesterday. That’s the great thing about this place - you can ask for anything and Vlad will cook it, whether it’s on the menu or not. Every day he tells us what fresh things he has in stock and we pick from that without even looking at the menu.
Full up we went back to our bungalow for a lay down.
In the evening we were still too full for dinner so ordered a bottle of wine and sat on the deck overlooking the mountain with the stars above us. Vlad brough us plates of nibbles to pick at and we spent the evening enjoying the view.
