Seath Sea Island
One of the smallest as you can see! Got back from Fiji this morning but it wasn't really what we expected. We did have a really good time but I think it was more because of the people we met.
We imagined it would be clear water, white sand, blue skies and sunshine but most of the time the water was too shallow to swim in and there was seaweed and stuff in the sea, there wasn't long streches of white sand (the sand wasn't that white and there were quite a lot of rocks and coral on the sand) and we only had one day of clear blue sky and sunshine, most days it was cloudy! So really not what we expected at all. Plus we did a deal with the Awesome Adventures package and there were lots of hidden costs so we ended up paying loads more than we expected. Awesome Adventures were really rubbish generally so were going to complain, we ended up spending so much money. And its not like we had any luxury - the places we were staying in were really really basic (most places didnt even have lights in the outside toilets and showers we had to use, once i had
Welcome Song
A Fijian welcome as you come onto the island! a shower in pitch black!) Plus we stayed in dorms all the way (even though the lady we booked some stuff with in Auckland at Backpacker World Travel told us there were no dorms in Fiji - clearly she was just lying to us - don't worry we're also complaining to them too!)
We did meet some lovely group of girls though who we ended up doing most of the island hopping with. Sam from Lewisham, Skye from Eltham and Zanna from the USA were the main girls that we spent our time with plus a few others. There isn't really anything to do in Fiji though, well on the islands anyway, apart from sunbath and eat and play cards! And most nights we all went to bed so early - once we went to bed at 7.30! But there really is nothing to do! On our last night though we thought we'd have a late one and went to bed at 1.30 which we were quite impressed with! We were on South Sea island which is tiny - you can walk round it in about 5 minutes but funnily enough I think it was the busiest place we
Fijian Dancing
Patrice and Zanna took centre stage! went! In the evening they had this crab race which was quite amusing - my crab got through the first round and then nearly made it to the second, he was about a centermeter away and then decided to turn round and go back again the stupid thing! Then we just sat up chatting and drinking wine and cocktails.
We also went to Bounty Island were Celebrity Love Island was filmed. That was a really nice island and they still have the Love Shack there but as it was only built as a temporary set they've let it go a bit and taken most of the stuff out but the bath and jacuzzi are still there, although nothing actually works.
We went hand line fishing on Kuata Island and I caught 2 fish - one small sunset fish and massive Rock Cod - it was over a foot long (maybe even 2 foot), I was very impressed with myself! And then when we got back they cooked it for us in the kitchen! Think they only gave me half though which I still had to share with everyone as it was a bit to much for me! Spent
The girls
From left to right: Sam, Zanna, Sky, Me and Patrice 2 nights on Kuata and had fun although the dorms were the worst ever with the squeekiest bunk beds in the world and it was like a wildlife sanctuary in there - lizards, cockroaches (that fly!!), ants in the beds (luckily not mine), moths and then the birds came in in the morning! Luckily we had mosquito nets so nothing got in mine although Patrice did get 2 cockroaches crawl into hers somehow and Sam woke up with squashed ants on her bed! It was not good but as we were all there we did see the funny side of it even when Zanna had her bag chewed by a rat (which another girl saw and later told us) - she had some sweets in there that the rat obviously wanted!
The Fijian people were really nice and everytime you arrive on an island they sing you a welcome song - all the workers stand there on the beach as you get there on the boat with their guitars! And then when you leave they serranade you with a goodbye song, one of which was very sad and made Sam cry! And in the evenings they did singing and
dancing too - at Coconut Bay (the worst place we stayed) they even taught us the Bula (means hello) Dance which was funny - even had a Macarena bit in it!
Did some snorkelling too, loads of pretty coral in Fiji so we saw so many fish, didn't find Nemo this time though but I did see 2 fish kissing!
Off to L.A today, will be nice having proper showers and not finding sand everywhere! With the time difference we land before we leave which is quite funny - we leave at 17.55pm on the 21st and arrive at about 10.00am on the same day, after the 12 hours flight!
