treasure island..
..one of the beautful islands we passed on the ferry. Bula,
Before we even got to fiji we had a little setback. We were delayed for 2 hours! Great! But when we finally boarded we only had a short 3 hour journey. We got to Nadi airport at 7.30pm, but we could already feel the temperature. It was like being back in Asia and was actually quite comforting as we knew this heat, it was nice. When we arrived we were greeted with shell necklaces, which was a nice touch. With the delay at the airport it had felt like quite a long day so we just got some dinner from the hotel. We were staying on the main land Nadi for just a night before catching the Yasawa flyer ferry for Nacula island for the remainder of our week in the sun!
The next day we were up early to catch the ferry for 5 hours to Nacula, and as soon as we arrived we were given lunch! Some of the food really wasnt great but at other times it was quite good. On the first lunchtime we had a cold burger-like the one that has been frozen that you are meant to cook, but this one had
just been defrosted and put in a bun! YUMMY! The beach was amazing with white sand and the clearest water we had seen-even better than Thailand! Just off the beach there is a long reef coral to snorkel on which had the most fantastic coral and fish. Even Han really enjoyed it. After the first time she went in she seemed to be in the water alot. The resort has sea kayaks so we went out on them alot as well. Every evening through dinner the locals sang for us and played guitars. As breakfast was at 8am everyone was always in bed early-like you dont get enough rest during the day!
One afternoon at 4.30pm, a group of friends we had met and us all asked if we could go hand-line fishing, so they arranged a boat and off we went. It was great as we got to watch the sun go down, and then see the millions of stars and galaxies in the sky, as it was so dark. We both caught a little fish each and were kept as bait, but we were both really chuffed. However, Han started to get some really sharp tugs on
nacula beach..
..a huge bay just for oarsmans bay lodge her line and then i did. It was hurting our hands to pull the lines up as it was really strong, but we lost the pull and started again. Then about 2 minutes later a girl on the other side of the boat, pulled up a ........ SHARK!!! Thats what we had been fishing for sharks. Several lines had been bitten straight off we couldnt believe it. We caught snapper and barracuda and even at another time, when Hans line got heavy again, we thought it must have been another shark, and this time it was hanging on. Han pulled it up and then throw it into the boat, where a huge lump of coral shattered everywhere. Han had fished coral! An Irishguy had had no luck, when he felt a tug. On pulling it to the surface all he had was a huge fish head, so obviously he had done well in catching a big fish, but then a shark or barracuda had come and bitten it off, poor guy no luck at all. Whats that saying - Luck of the Irish!!
The following day, some of the friends we had met, were leaving which was sad as it
another island in the distance..
...this was our view from our bure. such a small place, you get to know people really well but at dinner we got chatting to some new people and had such a laugh to such a point we were annoying everyone else. Han and i had met a couple called Dave and Nicky and we all went out for a snorkel together, we went further than we had been before to the depth of about 12 meters. We saw coral stations, where they are culturing coral and planting it somewhere it has been damaged. Han was also lucky enough to see a lionfish and a stingray!
On our penultimate day, we went on a village trip, we were surprised to hear they were once really into their cannablism, but now they have tourists and it wouldnt go down too well. It was very interesting and we saw how they all lived. As it was our last day, we spent the rest of the day lapping up the sun. In the evening the resort put on a local Fijian night, where we were given flower garlands and danced. We had food cooked in the Lovo (Underground oven) it was a great last evening. We couldnt believe we
our bure..
..right on the beach had reached the end of our trip. It had been an amazing experience, one that we would never forget. The only downside was we had 37 hours of travelling to get home-but hay ho, we were on our way home... Yea Baby!!
Party on dudes
