After another long coach journey from Alice Springs to Adelaide (only 20 hours this time!) we made our way down to Adelaide! Unfortunately we hadn't heard too great things about it but we like to make up our own minds! We did notice at first how cold it was! In Cairns it was averaging at about 30 Degrees for most of the week so getting down to below 20 Degrees felt freezing and I had hardly any warm clothes in my backpack! On our first day we quickly managed to find out where all the shops were! They have some cool stuff there, but being on a budget I managed to restrain myself from whipping the credit card out. After the shops we went to the recommended La Tratorrie for Pizza! We had a rather random evening when we returned to our hostel! We got taught poker by some friendly Dutch guys and an Isralien, then dragged them all out to a rather packed pub to watch the FA Cup final.
The second day we spent in Adelaide we went to the botanical gardens. I think we've seen the botanical gardens in every city we've been in so far
Ningili Caves
I'm not sure I'm spelling this right but its in Yallingup! but Adelaide's is probably the best one I've seen. It's just a really nice place to have a walk and there's loads to look at, its so big we ended up getting lost on our mission to find the exit and return back to our hostel. It's autumn/winter over here at the moment so it was quite pretty and looked all autumnal which was quite a change from the clear skys and sandy beaches.
After a couple of days in Adelaide that were quite chilled out we took our flight to Perth, our final stop of the Oz tour and our last state out of the five to visit! We stayed at a really cool hostel called 'The Witches Hat'. It was so homely and the beds were so comfortable!! We stayed there for three days and got to know the city, and Northbridge by Ryan's helpful tour guiding (he was lacking a bit of knowledge I'm afraid, didnt know where the Ripcurl shop was and he'd been there for a few months!) We spent an evening in Fremantle Prison doing a night tour with mini torches. It was so creepy! Jules you would love this place, its meant
to be haunted by the criminals that were there! Luckily we didnt get to see any, just a few jumpy moments made by the tour guide!
After 3 days in Perth we had a road trip down to Margaret River. We had Ryan as the driver, and I did my best at the map reading. It was a pretty cool trip where we got to go to a few places that most backpackers dont venture to, especially at this time of year. We stopped at Ningili Caves for our first tourist stop. This was a pretty cool underground cave of staligmites the kind of thing I've never really seen before. After a good walk around the caves we carried on our journey to Margaret River, then down to our accommodation at Peverly Beach. The next day we did our best at finding other spots to look at then returned to Perth to stay with my cousin Lee.
It felt quite lucky having family in Australia as it meant our own room, a proper lounge, and more homely comforts than a hostel. It was also really nice to see a bit of family after almost four months of seeing
no one you know from back home. We had quite a busy weekend with my cousin, they seem to have a healthy social schedule. We went to a 50th surprise party which was amusing! free alcoholic slushes that were slightly addictive for some reason, and surprisingly a lot of brummies! it turns out that despite lee's wife being an aussie most of her family are from Birmingham! I felt very at home! We saw a bit of the nightlife an went to dinner at the weekend. Overall it was quite a change from normal backpacker life which was nice to have near the end of oz.
After Perth all ended in Oz back where we started, the lovely Melbourne! It was pretty cool to see the city again and we surprisingly discovered a lot more than the first time! One of the things that I found most interesting was their alleyway nightlife and shopping, they are all in alley ways and all over the place. We went to one bar that we never would have found if we hadnt have been directed somewhere and it was quite unusual, science equipment behind the bar and all over the place then
The eery prison at its worst!
I have no idea why I took this but I thought it was fairly interesting, and just plain creepy, me and luc reckon we can see a face on the right hand side (there's a bit of a glow). Hope it doesnt cause any nightmares! real grass on the bar! It made the city seem very cool.
We had a good end to a fantastic trip around Oz, only New Zealand and Thailand left for the next 2 months then I'll be back home!
