Cairns
2 nights in Cairns, which is a small town on the North East coast, which doesn't have too much to offer. The tide is out most of the day so they have built a lagoon for people to sunbathe around and have a dip. Other than that we only went out 1 night on the town (if you can call it that) and meet up with the Irish girls from Perth. As usual we were all on top form and were doing shots at 8pm before we'd even left the hostel, go us.
I can't remember too much of the evening but seem to have photo's of a few guys mooning us, and some of the floor?? Clearly my hand eye co-ordination had gone by then! Amie and Jen found a shopping trolley in the town centre and thought that it would be a laugh if they got in and pushed each other around. The problem being that when Jen told Amie to get out of the trolley, she refused thinking that she was having to much fun, only to turn round and be confronted by 2 police officers, who didn't think it was funny at all, she soon hopped
Oh dear Wade...
Wheres your sasuage roll?? out after that!
We woke up in the morning for a 9.30 check out, when Wade pipes up and remembers an incident from the night before. After staggering home without us, she decided she was hungry. Seen as there is a cafe in the reception of our hostel, she didn't think this would be a problem. Only when she arrived in said reception, there was no one covering the desk. Instead of just going back up to the room and going to bed like any normal person, her hunger consumed her and she broke into the cafe and stole a sausage roll..... Not only did she steal it, she ate half of it and I found the other half stuffed between her bunk bed and the frame.... filth, pure filth.
Overnight bus from Cairns to Airlie Beach, 11 hrs of bum numbing pain.
Airlie Beach
We are staying in Backpackers on the Bay, which comes across as a bit of a dive but the people are friendly, when they want to be and they are great for booking trips from.
Whitsunday Islands
1 night 2 days in Whitsunday Islands. Boat trip to the Whitsunday Islands, which
are the submurged montain caps creating 74 Islands, located just off the sunshine coast. First stop is Daydream Island, small and beautiful. Just a stop over to drop off the people staying there. Then on to Hamilton Island, where we hired golf buggies to travel round the Island to take in all the sites. This seems to be the only way around the place, even the locals are in on the action. The Island is about half the size of Sheppey and has 360o of stunning views. Then lunch and off to Whitehaven Beach, white sands and stinger suits (oh yes they don't let you just get in the water round here) surrounded by a National Park. There is a high risk of getting stung by green sting jelly fish round here, so they dress us up in what can only be described as lycra wetsuit. We looked like a group of seal's, they had mittens and hoods just to top it off.... how funny. Every time you wanted to get in for a dip, which is frequently when the weather is 35oC and the white sand is reflecting it straight back up at you, you spend 10 mins falling
around in the sand trying to put it on. I must admit we had a good laugh at each other.
We had a nights stay in Long Island included in our 2 day package and can't believe our luck when we rock up at a picture perfect beach with a brand new hotel. The hotel caters for everything from backpackers to 5* accommodation. Which means we get use of the pool, pool bar, spa, sauna, games room.... the works. We were lapping it up, lazing around and being all demanding. The only problem is we do have to leave at some point.
Whilst sitting at the bar taking in the views over the bay, we were disturbed by a couple running off the beach. When I asked what was going on, they said that there was a snake heading up the beach towards the bar!! Oh dear. Luckily there was a glass panel between the beach and me so I was happy to hang round and see if I could get a look. To say I was surprised when the snake started climbing up the tree in front of me is an understatement... It just kept coming, and
coming. When it finally stopped weaving up it was about 5 foot long. The snake man from reception came down and put us all at rest by saying it was just a python... oh okay, it's just a python, no big deal!
Back to Airlie Beach and we decided to go for a chopper ride over the Islands to get some pics. It's only 10 mins and at a cost of 45pounds but really is worth it. Although the pic of Wade with her headset on is priceless!
Great Barrier Reef
I had decided to get my butt over to the Great Barrier Reef, seen as Wade is not keen on the sea AT ALL, I went over on my own. A 2 1/2 hour boat trip over to knuckle reef where they have built a pontoon. On the journey over there they sell you all the extras and for the first time ever I decided to do the scuba dive. I have always had a bit of a fear of this and never even considered it, but seen as it was the Great Barrier Reef I thought I'd give it a go. All was fine until the
group before me came up and mentioned that they had just seen a reef shark...... A WHAT! was my reaction. But no one else seemed to mind so I just carried on like everyone else. We only went down about 6 meters but it seems like miles when you are looking back up to the top of the water. We dived for about 30 mins, and of course I pooped my pants when said shark came into view. I'd like to say that it was a life and death experience, but it just turned round and run away when it saw us.
Well that's all for today folks. Be back soon for my next installment.
