Mushroom Rock 05-09-13
After 2 nights of being battered by strong winds, we were well and truly ready to leave Nanga Bay. We packed up this morning without breakfast and hit the road, the wind was just causing too much of a battle.
We made it Billabong Roadhouse, you beauty, an egg and bacon sandwich for me, an egg and bacon roll for Pete, we had already boiled the kettle and filled thermy, so made ourselves a nice hot coffee and enjoyed a well-earned breakfast.
Back on the road, Kalbarri is our destination. Peter has been hanging out to see Natures Window, a major attraction in the Kalbarri NP. Not far out of Kalbarri we see a sign that the road is closed due to roadworks. How disappointing, we had planned this stop especially to see this natural wonder! So it goes without saying, we were bitterly disappointed and wondered what on earth this little town had to offer us now. Of course, the first stop would be the Tourist Info Centre. That proved disappointing as well. We had obviously got the girl who had just returned from lunch, didn’t really give a toss about the tourism in the town,

wild waves and to top it all off, she had just finished a cigarette and stunk! At this point in time, we were feeling like there was nothing in this town for us.
We came back to our camp had a bite to eat and decided to take a drive to Rainbow Valley and Mushroom Rock lookouts which is a 3km loop nature trail between the two, and after that we would stop in at Red Bluff look out.
On arrival at Mushroom rock, it was pretty impressive, as you walk along, there is a rock that has been sculpted by nature, wind, sea and rain, and resembles a huge mushroom. Anyhow, further along the walk, the rock in which we had come to view became rather insignificant as we were so taken by the rugged coast line and angry waves thrashing against it.
We had changed our minds about Kalbarri and decided we needed an extra day here to cover all the activities.

This morning our first stop was to watch the Pelican feeding in the park at 8.45, on arrival, there was one pelican there to greet us. Oh well, one was better than

pipe rocks a complete no show I guess. Not long after we arrived, the volunteer pelican feeder arrived with her bucket of sardines, and began giving us an sight to this big and beautiful in their own special way bird. It proved to be quite interesting.
Back to the caravan park for some brekky and we would be heading off to the Kalbarri NP to visit the Hawks Head and Ross Graham lookouts and have a look at and get some photos of some wildflowers along the way. There are so many wildflowers out at the moment, it is truly spectacular.
We were unable to visit Natures Window as there are road works going on, from June to October the road is closed. Good thinking Shire of Murchison, why wouldn’t you do some major road construction on the way to one of the towns major tourist attractions during the peak period!!!
Back to camp for lunch and this afternoons activities would take us visiting some rugged, wild but stunning coast line of Western Australia. We visited the Natural Bridge, Island Rock, Grandstand, Shellhouse and Eagle Gorge lookouts, which gave us great vantage points for some stunning views. After all

Natural Bridge that we stopped in to visit Pot Alley, hadn’t read anything about it anywhere but we were driving past so thought we would drop in. There was a sign to the beach, so we thought this could be interesting as all we had seen so far along the tracks were stunning cliffs and wild seas. Off we went, the path took us down a magnificent little gorge walk to this tiny little beach with cliffs either side, absolutely stunning, the seas were wild, the waves were crashing and the photo opportunities were endless. You could sit on these rocks for hours snapping away because every time a wave comes in, it presents a completely different photo opportunity than the last wave. I guess it would be fair to say, each wave has a personality all its own and these waves were angry. 300 odd photos for the day, that’s a good day out, and is well worthy of a couple of ciders!
