Hard to believe I have been gone for a week - although 3 of those days, due to the strangeness of the international dateline were 'in transit'
Susan and I did a whirlwind tour of Perth after she collected me at the airport, buying prescription snorkel masks, phone chargers, 3 G to wifi things... I have never spent so much time trying to figure what technological devices to take with me. Now figuring out how to use them is a task!
My second day in Perth, Susan and I did some packing, then took a picnic lunch downtown. After eating we went to the Catholic cathedral for a musical presentation on the 7 Last Words of Christ, and then a Good Friday service. It was fascinating....I was interested to note that at least 80% of the attendees were for cultural backgrounds other than white European, and probably half of them were under 40 years old. Following mass we took an hour's walk through King's Park which is a lovelypark, 400 hectares, one of the largest urban parks in the world. We had lovely views of the river.
Saturday we loaded up and headed out on the first of
our two road trips. No one looking at the car would dream that we were only going for 9days - unless they know Susan!
First stop- New Norcia, a Benedictine monastery and town founded by Spanish Benedictines in1847. We went on a guided tour of the town, the Abbey church and various colleges, attended Vespers and then saw a fascinating film called Of Gods and Men. Then on Sunday morning I rose at 4 am to attend the 3 hour Easter vigil which began at 4:30. It was a wonderful service. The abbey church has a fabulous pipe organ and a good organist, and various other musicians were visitingfrom Perth to participate-cantors, trumpeter, strings.... What was interesting was how much of the music I knew. Marty Haugen tunes, the Celtic Alleluia that is a favorite in our hymn book, all of the psalm settings...
After Susan and I attended the 9 am mass, we toured the museum. Then off we set for the town of York. It was interesting to see the countryside. It is the end of the summer here, the crops are in. We saw fields of stubble being burned (carefully one hopes), massive towers and
walls of square hay bales, fields of melons with sheep grazing amongst them. We had dinner in York, and stayed at a B&B. The propritor's daughter in law is the cousin of a woman named Sally Morgan, an Aboriginal woman who has written a book that both S. &I have read, about being Aboriginal inAustralia, a book called 'My Place'.
this moening we took th 6 hour drive south to Denmark. We are staying at the YHA. It was interesting to have supper with the young people and hear what sort of travels they are having. So, that about sums up the first week! I have now got the wifi working so am able to get started on the blog. stay tuned for more later!

Happy Easter!
Hi Carole, It's wonderful to again keep up with your travels on your blog - great job!!! We had to stay in town for Easter as I had way too much accounting to catch up on from work due to being away from it for a month so got to church yesterday for Easter (10a.m. service only). It was a wonderful service. Nadia played the organ so beautifully, Doug followed Deb's children's story with guitar song, Larry sang his mother's favourite "He Arose" a capella which was nicely done, Deb had a wonderful sermon and the church was gloriously decorated with beautiful flowers by Faye. While I so missed getting to the cabin (first time ever we've not been there all winter) it was great to be at church for Easter. I finally felt well enough to have a lovely long conversation with Jim & Dorothy who are both doing well. Eric was home & came with them. Ilse did have a fall and injured just her little finger (she thinks) - she had it wrapped in a tensor but was otherwise very happy. Stan's son Steven surprised him with a visit (never met him before) which was very special for Stan. Stan also brought the Anniversary Directories - your & Jim's picture is really great! Despite everyone there I missed you and prayed you're having safe travels and an absolutely wonderful vacation. Can't wait for your next entry! Hugs, Kim & Anton:) :)
