Easy to play, easy to win!
A Carnie? A carnie? Yep a random job I know not going to get me an MD job after seeing this reference but a great chance to do something random, save and see the west coast, was going to miss the smiles but life's about choices and taking risks otherwise it would be boring so here goes!
After seeing Sal off for the last time was off on a bus to bunbury to meet my boss and head carnie Marty. The nine of us took to the road on a 13 week adventure across western oz. We stopped for the night at gin-gin It was freezing and the sleeping conditions are better on prisoner cell block H! A caravan split in three housing 6! Ah its all part of the fun we woke early and arrived at our first stop Cervantes. We set up had a couple of beers and hit the hay!
I was given the role of the basketball stand man which was alright looking at some of the other stands! Not much in our first two stops of Cervantes and Lehman just fishing towns really with a mucky beach
which the car got stuck and a messy four crate sesh in Lehman! Had a massive drive to Newman then again sweet fa so set me off on a spartan regime after the boozing off Perth they had a pool so started canning lengths 100 a day. South Headland was the same - dump just pool so just more swimming and shows! Caught my first fish here though which was ace bought the only highlight in my first two weeks! Doubted weather id made the right decision with Sal all the time three months now seemed so long and hoped we could see it through and hopefully this trip would get better and vindicate my decision. I was saving and training well so things were going good.
Broome finally shined the first bit of sunshine on my trip! The place reminded me of Byron Bay a cool chilled laid back place with the most amazing sunsets id ever seen. Went for a night out here as by the sounds of it wouldn't have too many on the trip the places we were going! Cable Beach was stunning and Gan theme point and lifted my spirits of the trip. Also
saw a great accoustic session in divers bar.
Then Derby nice enough place but starting to realize im a city boy not a country lad i was missing my city perks and was growing weary of the lack of things to do and sites of country life. Derby was nice nice sunsets but I was bored and longed for some fun times! The shows were going well but missed being with Sal we talked every day but conversation was harder to come by I could sense Sal was having reservations.
Got to Fitzroy crossing again a sleepy shit hole with a gorge its only major attraction woopty fuckin do! And Sal called couldn't do it anymore needed some time to be on her own and not have to worry about anyone else. I understood I'd been there myself a year earlier but nevertheless was a kick in the gonads. It was hard but as always looked for the positives still saving money still training should come back looking better and more in the bank balance. Fitzroy crossing wasn't a great week apart from being a total hole my camera also broke and stepped on a spike and had
five stitches in my foot so by the time the week was over in Fitzroy cant really said I will have the fondest memories of the place! Also this time the boss cristened my sexy fingers after everything I touched got fucked haha!
These three weeks were the worst legs shit aboriginal hole followed by shit aboriginal hole me and my mate Ian were struggling! Halls creek boasted a small pool and a library china wall and wolfs creek filled a couple of days here though thank god! After this Turkey Creek was right in the country we lived opposite a petrol station for three days that was it, me and Ian climbed a mountain that's as good as it got! We looked forward to dvds as a highlight of the days and counted down the time till tea these places were dire!
At last light though, we were through the worst Wyndham while still country was a pretty little place with great look-out points and watering holes. Civilization was getting close and bring on Kunnunura which had a pool again, internet access and shops, I could have a hair cut! I liked Kunnunura Kelly Knob, Lake Argyle
and the national park were good day trips while me and Ian chilled out at thew pool in between. They was also a glimmer of nightlife a band on Friday night women again but this closed at 12 but was nice to have even a taste of the nightlife.
Back to Broome I grinned like a Cheshire cat on the way back chilling on cable beach I couldn't wait. While the other lads spent the day 30ks out in a service station i booked into a backpackers that seemed like heaven in comparson to the caravan!
Came back to earth with a bump though with the shockingly sad news back from home that my old housemate and good friend Spice had passed away while traveling, it put everything into perspective he was a superb great healthy bloke and one of the nicest people you could meet hit hard that things like this I wasn't home for friends weddings, saying goodbye to people we care about this is the one thing which I really hate about being away. It hurt that I wasn't going to be there with my other mates to say goodbye. Still though Spice would want
me to carry on living the dream just like he was and I will. So after a day of contemplation down cable beach a friend came down to watch stairway to the stars with me which is where the moon rose from the sea and the reflections looked like steps to the moon, had some beers for spice and got sloshed. Woke up the next day worse for wear and chilled before watching the great acoustic band from before.
Had a couple more days out on the piss in Broome before getting to Roeburn the dirtiest of aboholes covered in litter, after that onto onslow which was a nice sleepy little fishing village which I enjoyed being the only one on the beach for miles! After this went to Wickham which was also crap but me and a mate took a trip down to Karajinin National Park which was the highlight of my trip with stunning scenary of gorges and falls. Pannawonika after this was a dead mining town which the highlight was a libray never read so many books! The final week in Sharks bay while nice eveyone couls see theend we were ready to go. Seems along
three and a half months but Ill look back fondly on my times with the carnies. Made me appreciate the simple things in life away from tv and my ipod, but at the same time made me understand im a city boy! Cant wait to get back to civilisation got a week in perth sorting out bits and bobs then going to try my arm down the tropical islands of the whitsundays fingers crossed and see how that goes!
Missing you all
Loads of love
