Perth 16th February - Tuesday
Up for 8.30 am pick up for Captain Cook Tours Famous wine cruise on the Swan river. Departed Barrack Jetty, Perth destination he Sandalford Winery upstream somewhere.
Started with a civilised coffee at say 9.45/10.00 ish ( there are a lot of ishes today).
Introduced to first wines at 10.15 ish (told you so). Two whites and two reds, tasting glasses, none of those plastic egg cups you see around (we are afterall in Australia). To pad he tasting out, cheese and biscuits were doled out. Interesting 3 cheeses wine was , all from New Zealand (processed) Edam, Gouda & Comily - all looked the same and tasted the same. Who said that TOGs didn’t know what they were talking about. ( Sorry for non Terry Wogan fans). Anyway these were followed by a taste of which wine was the favourite from the first 4 tasted. For me a red and Lin a white. There followed another 2 white and 2 reds before dropping people off at the Waters Edge winery (they were continuing by coach, it is also where we would have lunch.
Arriving at the Sandalford winery we made our way to the
tasting room. We were introduced to 3 whites/3 reds and a hefty port (just what you want with a 38 degree heat). Water was taken as well, cheese (same) and crackers provided. Lin bought 2 bottles (they wont leave Australia) and some souvenirs.
After the tasting , back to the boat and presented with glass of red/white to cruise down the river for lunch. A nice gentle trip to arrive for about 2 pm for lunch. Beautiful setting on the banks of the Swan river. Lunch was a platter of olives with dips, followed by chicken (on risotto rice) for me and Barramundi on mash (yellow) for Lin with plenty of red and white wine flowing (in proper glasses).
Lunch was followed by a further tasting of 3 whites and 3 reds (and another port) using our lunch glasses. (I don’t think we tasted many of these!!)
Lin had got chatty to a Korean girl who was on holiday so they spent time away from the tasting table.
During lunch we were entertained from an unlikely source- Victoria & Chris - two crew members sang to us (cabaret). Apparently when they apply for the job not only do they get
interviewed they also have to audition as well. Victoria is from Yorkshire & Chris a local lad was going the WA University for performing arts. They were good and promised more on the way back down the river.
Back to the boat for 3.10 pm for the remainder of the trip. A leisurely trip (with entertainment) . Drinks available (if you wish). By mid afternoon the locals are out on the river in force, canoeing, water skiing, wind surfing and fishing. If it can be done on water, they do it!!
We were met at the jetty and back at the hotel for 5.00pm (ish)
After a quick relax before a few starters off the hotel menu - olives, foccacia, chorizo salad with duck.
Big day coming up, we are meeting my (AH) cousins in the morning who until 3 weeks ago, were unknown to us.
