Day 1 (Perth) - Vanessa was waiting for me as I exited the secure area bound for the baggage claim. It was the first time in a long time that I can remember anyone waiting for me like that. It was certainly a first for the trip and quite nice. We walked to the baggage claim and then waited for the bags as we caught up. The bags came and we hopped in her new car. We were going to a dress up (costume) party that evening, therefore we had to pick up a kimono from her mom to serve my geisha costume. We drove out along the beach where Vanessa’s mom, Sabrina, was running a boating event through her boat club. Sabrina kindly bought us sandwiches and cokes and introduced us to some of her friends. We talked a while before we were back in the car headed back to Vanessa’s place. Along the way, we stopped at Cottesloe Beach, where we got out of the car and observed the entered structures in an art contest set among the sand, water and trees. It was quite a lovely beach and a nice way to share the afternoon. We got back
in the car after getting two ice cream cones and she showed me where she worked and the large park of the city that had some great views of the city and the ocean and river that it lives beside. It was getting late so we drove back to my base of operations for the next 3 days. Vanessa has a nice two bedroom townhome, which she shares with her roommate Ronny. After getting cleaned up, we rushed to the party. We were the first ones there aside from the 3 roommates but that was nice as it gave me a chance to slowly learn names and meet the hosts. The people there were very friendly and I was surprised how many were foreign implants (French, German, Kiwi, etc.). I think Perth is a hot place as its economy has been booming and it is not as sought after as Sydney or Melbourne, so it is easier to get work permits and be sponsored for citizenship but that is just a guess. The party was fun but Vanessa had to leave early as she was working nights, hence her doctor costume (she is a doctor). I stayed at the party
as the hosts offered to let me sleep on a couch or the hammock and I was having a pretty good time. At about 1am, the juke box got bumping and I got pulled into one song to sing the guy part. The girls seemed to like how that went so they kept picking duet songs. I snuck away a couple times but was eventually caught and brought back. I felt like everyone else who didn’t know what was going on must have hated me for hogging the machine. After a while I just got over it and put on a show with my lady friends. The night went late with me crashing on the hammock just before 5am.
Day 2 (Sunday) - Vanessa picked me up around 9am. I was already awake as I had a Charlie horse that morning and then had trouble nodding off in the morning break. We were both pretty tired so we took naps. I awoke before Vanessa but took the opportunity to catch up on some emails. Vanessa was up and around near 1pm. We went to a nice little area down the road with a main drag full of coffee shops
and little boutiques. We stopped at one and got to have a more relaxed talk without distractions. From there we moseyed around the street, doing a little window shopping and going in a bookstore. There was a little park at the end where we sat in the swings. From there we went to the grocery store to pick up some things for dinner then headed back to V’s homestead. Vanessa was kind enough to make dinner. I offered to help but she said she would just like appreciate the company, so we talked as she prepared dinner. We had sausages on a roll and salad. The salad went down incredibly smooth as I was feeling my body starting to crave vegetables again. The sausages were a close second though. After dinner, we watched a movie then Vanessa headed to work. I used the internet and then watched another movie before crashing in V’s unused bed.
Day 3 (Monday) - Vanessa came back from work just after 8am. We were planning on going to Rottnest Island, just a 45 minute ferry from the wharf. V had hoped that she would get some sleep while on call at the hospital but
only got a couple hours. She was a trooper though and we picked up her friend Pip on the way to the wharf. We were just minutes late but were able to catch the next boat at a close by pier. When we reached the other side, we immediately rented bikes then started riding around the island. We should not have paid extra for the multi-speed bikes because they didn’t work properly. Fortunately, the ride wasn’t too grueling and the scenery was distracting enough to keep my mind off my faulty bike. The water alternated with crystal like shades of blue. It was gorgeous to the point of not possibly being captured by a picture. We quickly found a private beach (10 x 5 meters) where Pip and I alternated skin diving (not at great depths). Then we laid out till we dried and as Vanessa caught the smallest of naps. Within an hour and a half we were back on our bikes and finishing the circuit of the bike trail. When we got back, we returned our bikes and grabbed lunch and cool drinks. We then walked around town a bit and shortly had to catch the ferry back.
Back on the mainland, we went from there to a local brewery that was nearby and known for its Sunday afternoon crowd. We were only there for less than an hour before we headed to Sabrina and her boyfriend’s house boat for dinner. Sabrina made a great risotto and salad. Vanessa was fading fast though, so we left without much ado. We headed back, dropping Pip off along the way and went back. Vanessa was asleep in minutes. I was very thankful that she pushed through the pain of exhaustion and showed me the beautiful island, which I would likely have never seen otherwise. And now I was glad that she was finally getting her sleep.
Day 4 (Tuesday) - I woke up around 8 and finished packing. We headed to the airport so early that Vanessa had time to come in and grab a coffee and a breakfast snack with me. We then browsed around the airport shops and finally it was time for me to go. We crammed a lot in and it felt a lot longer than it was. I really enjoyed Perth and was sorry to be leaving after such a short time. It has
Private Beach
Pip, Vanessa and I a laid back nature and is quite pretty. But I didn’t like that it was a sprawl city. The fact that it is a smaller city wouldn’t bother me aside from it being so isolated from the rest of the world. But it is definitely my favorite place in Australia so far.
