Well i have surrived the bush and all the perils that come along with it. I loved the trip down from Darwin to Broome. The group was 16 of us and our fearless leader was an ex army solidger of 16 years so there was no messing around with him. He was defo the right man that you wanted out with you in the bush, when we get flat tyers and where we really were no phones, roads and no electricty which was great, we all got terrible dirty as there were really no where for us to wash, so the only kind of cleaning that we got was all the swimming that we did in the gorges and waterfalls that are getting ready for the the monsoon that is coming.
The sky was always intresting to look at, the clouds that you never really see in Oz were everywhere, they call it the "build up" and it was great to see from the truck window. We would be up at 5am most mornings, as we tried to sleep in our swags most nights because it was too hot to be sleeping in tents and any how "Freckle" our
The build-up
Getting ready for the Monsoon guide hated tents and said they were for wooses...so we got up when the sun came up and went walking in the bush and swimming when it was still cool enough to move about then when the heat came on we would hide in the truck and travel for miles and miles, i think we must have covered some 2500 miles.
Then in the afternoons we would set up camp and go on another walk or swim, got tracking bush animials, see crocs swimming and resting by the shores. Cook when the sun came down and when play cards and drink goon ( cheep Aussie wine form a box ). The group was really good and everyone pitched in with the cooking, clearing up and packing up of the truck. Groups formed very quickly and i have to say that i was in the cool group. There was me, a welsh girl louise, 2 dutch girls Annefrid and Eefae, 2 aussie boys Chris and Sam and Lizzie an older english woman who was nice as ever.
There is no need to watch big brother, watching out group dinamics and how people changed was very intresting. I loved seeing
flys everywhere
still looking cool under the net espically the boys wanting all the be alpha male....how silly. They would all climb up to the highest rock and throw themselves off into the water below. I only went to the middle hights like 4/5 meters, but the boys were up to 15 some meters. Was cool to watch but not for me to get involved with.
The highlight of the trip was defo the bungel bungels which were amazing, we got there early went for a long walk where the flys attacked us no end ( fly nets at the ready ), then went to find the helicopters which had no doors on them!!! and payed far too much money for a 20 minute ride over them, but i figured was never really going to see them again so i just put it on the credit card and will think about it later. The ride was amazing, i was so excited by all of it. I took so many photos and could not stop smiling for the rest of the day. One of our days was Chris Birthday, though he kinda forgot which day it was on!!! but we managed to get him some cakes, hats and
sam with all the ladies
it's all about the nets baloons and a banner it was cute and lots of fun and we made everyone sing happy birthday in their own languages.
The trip ended in Broome and we all went out for a big night which ended up on the beach with the rest of the beer from the trip, chatting with Aussie boys who asked where England and Holland were and what languages we spoke in them!!! needless to say that we left them too it. One of the days we went to the old outdoor movies, which played very funny english film " death at a funeral" you sit on deckchairs under the stars and we laughed and laughed so much. I was a little worried that the Dutch girls might not get the houmour but it was not lost on them, and at one point i was coking from laughing so much. Lou said her face hurt the next day from all the laughing.
We were all meant to be off in the next few days, but as it was Melbourne cup day on Tuesday which is the biggest race in Oz, we all decided to stay a bit longer and hang out for
sunset on the van
anything to set the shoot the cup, we all got dressed up i put a bet on 3 horses. Chris had to show me how to do it. When the race was over and the fav had not won we all managed to win something on the horse who came second, so we celebrated into the night. In the evening we went down to cable beach and watched one of the most amazing sunsets, they have camel rides along the beach then, but for $50 to ride an animal who bites and spits at you, i passed on it. Just sitting with my mates drinking cocktails and hanging out was even better.
We have all gone our seperate ways now, i am in the lovely land of Perth having traveling down on the easyrider bus from exmouth. I got the 25 hour greyhound bus from Broome to Exmouth, i though it would be mental and strip my soul, but it was actually really nice, you get to see the outback, the landscape changing, the sunsetting over the desert. It really humbles you, and gives you time to think about stuff, what you have done and what you will be doing. I really liked it.
Bungel Bungel action
the helicopiter trip was amazing...worth the visa bill Exmouth was a tiny town with some great diving points and i think it might be situated somewhere on the surface of the sun, it was that hot, but when the sun goes down it is bloody cold, i even had to find my pia hat to keep warm!!!!
I then got picked up on the big yellow easyrider bus, and were taken to coral bay where the beaches were amazing, monkey mia where we went out on a boat and saw a pod of wild dolphins and other sea fairing animals, was very exciting. we then went back to the shore where some wild-ish dolphins had come to shore and we stood there with the rangers and saw people feeding them. Then by joy of all joy they chose me to feed the dolphin a fish!!! i wasn't sure that they were really asking me, so i looked to the little kid by my side, but it was me they were asking and i left the kid to feel left out...hell when am i ever going to be able to fee another dolphin???
We worked out way down the coast stopping at little town, where the pubs
more bungles
the white people didn't know about these mountains till 1984...best kept secret are full of locals and us woman don't get surved until last and all the men have mullets and long unattracvite beards...oh the fun. Though the jukebox was very good. The pinicles were cool to see, lots of falic looking stones that look like a rock grave yard, but the flys were mental and we had to hide for cover, even when we got the beach, i had to swim in my fly net...the other 2 girls who came in with me were laughing when i went in the water when, but after a while they were jealous of my net. I guess it is kind of like having small kids, you just need 2 minutes to do something, like getting dressed without hassel...the flys won't even give you that.
I am leaving for Melbourne on the morrow to go to Caroline's engagement party, see some of my old Uni mates, and try and do some woofing ( working on organice farms ). Am looking forward to a new place and old faces. I have loved the west and being back here has brought back lots of old and happy memories.
Hope you kids are all doing well,
and are enjoying the winter/festive season that is upon us here. It is bloody 35+oc outside in the city in the bush it was 550c, and they have lots of fake christmas trees up and fake snow...what is going on there?
