Arrive
Touch at Perth Touchdown! Left SA on the 1st June 07 at 22:45 and touched down in Perth at 13:30. The flight was fine, though it was delayed, I took Rogers advice and slept as soon as I got on the plane. Pulled on the bright orange eye patches, said goodnight to Johnny - a really good chap. He had just been back to SA to see his Dad who lives on a farm in Lydenberg. He said his head had not been in the right space, about staying in Auz before the trip out, but his head was perfect after the visit he just wished his Dad would join him. “die plek is in n kak toestand” he said referring to SA. He is a boilermaker and working on one of the mines north of Perth. He and his family moved out to Auz about three years ago and he said it has taken him the longest to settle in.
I woke about an hour later to have some dinner; Johnny had smashed his 8th rum and coke and was stretching himself out on the three seats next to me. I was sleeping upright and found that much more comfortable. A
feet
Are these boots make for walking light Thai chicken curry is what was on offer and it went down fine. Then back to sleep. I woke with about an hour to go till we hit Perth. I put my headphones on and for the first time joined the movie audience - I don’t remember what the movie was and knew we wouldn’t see the end of it so didn’t give it much attention - ja me the movie addict?
We touched down in Perth and getting through customs was a breeze. Then out to the afternoon air of Perth, a really beautiful day to arrive. And there is me looking around for Rog….. no Rog. So I wait a little, still no Rog. Mmm! Is he sending me a message I wonder “now that you have arrived you are on your own!”
So I wait a little more, think about getting a coffee and go back inside. Cappuccino’s $3.50 that’s R21.00 mmm suddenly not so thirsty! Back outside. Still no Rog! Call him. “Hello” “Hey Moer where r you?” “Doug’s shit you at the airport!” “Ja blikzem I arrived about 15 min ago” “I phone those punks and they said the flight was delayed, sorry Boets, ok I am on my way!”
Not much later Rog arrives and off we go back to his house. It is great to see Shaz and Trent and finally meet little Paige - my new niece! Trent was a little shy initially but was soon dragging me around by the finger to show me all sorts of things.
The Jet lag took me a few days to kick and was quite surprised by being so tired, but then again I was rushing around like a mad thing trying to get everything organized before I left. Thanks again Mom for all the help, and for letting me use the farm as a storage place for a while.
Sunday we headed up north of Perth to have lunch with Dave and Lisa and their little girl about Trent’s age. Dave is a grower and breeder of stone fruit trees. Trent had a terrific time running around the farm and seeing Dave’s tractors - he was so excited! Running around in circles like a little nutter!
Interesting thing about Auz - on the way up I noticed traffic officers on the side of the road next to a caravan which seemed to be manned by them. There was a sign outside “Free coffee for drivers”, Rog then told me that if you were the drive of your car, truck motorbike etc you could not only stop here and have a free cup of coffee but get a free cup of coffee at any of the roadside diners or café’s. The owners of the various establishments claim back form the government who pays for the coffee’s. This is part of the governments attempt to keep road death down.
Can you imagine giving our taxi drivers at home free coffee - it would be like the Texas Chainsaw massacre on steroids - every taxi driver high on caffeine. And every Wild Bean Café out of business waiting for the Gubberment to refund them? Had to chuckle quietly to myself.
