Night Out in Perth
This was the English Girls' last night before leaving for Sydney, so ofcourse we had to celebrate Wow! I can not believe how fast the time has gone since I last blogged. It has just completely flown by, and now it seems, like only a little while longer till I'll be back in freezing cold Canada.
So much has happened in the last 3 months, it's crazy to think I'll have to sum it up in one entry. Well, I must say...Perth was by far my favorite city visited in all of Australia. If there was one place I'd pick to live in in Australia, it would no doubt in my mind, be the pick of the bunch.
So, after arriving in Melbourne in early November, Jason and I decided it was far too cold to settle down there and work, so we sparatically bought tickets to Perth and booked two nights into a Hostel. The day we arrived was the day we accomplished the most. Even though jetlagged and just plain lazy, we decided to check out some other hostels in the vicinity to see if they had any long term accomodation available. The first hostel we went to surprised us with a 'yes', and the lady showed us the most beautiful two-million dollar house
Happy 23rd Jason!
Jason with his massive Chocolate Zucchini Cake that they were renting out to backpackers. Now, this house had everything. It was two train stops away from Perth, in a little posh suburb called Subiaco. Subi, as we liked to call it, had three supermarkets, the one closest being open till 10pm, seven days a week, a BOOST juice, POST nearby, two very nice pubs, Hungry Jacks and Subway, lots of shops and most importantly, the best chocolate shop just down the road. Our house had awesome (and entertaining) roomates, FOX-tel cable tv, two computers with internet, spacious kitchen, a BBQ, three showers that could fit 20 people easily, and huge spacious rooms with plenty of wardrobe space....my favorite!
After settling into "Shannon House" located at 23 Coolgardie Street, Jason and I started our search for jobs. Jason found a job in Perth at The Ridges Hotel, working as a server in the attached restaurant; CBD. I was lucky to find a job at The Vic Hotel, which was the one I really, really wanted. This was one of the two popular pubs in Subi. I worked as a bartender, and loved it straight away. My duties included pouring the perfect beer, skimming the foam off the
White Christmas???
Nope, and it was fine by me! All of us just chillin by the BBQ, cookin up some chicken wings top, and ensuring the perfect amount of head on the beer; 2 fingers length. If you were from Belgium, you'd know that beer is serious business. I also learned how to make specialty coffees, as well how to take care of functions in either the Mezzanine or the Boardroom.
After working a while at The Vic and just raving about how great the job was there, Jason decided to give it a go and apply. With a little help from me, he got the job, and worked with me for two and a half weeks leading up to Christmas. It was so much fun working together. It got even more exciting in late mid December when Jason's 23rd birthday arrived (Dec 19). This was a chance I didn't miss to make him the BEST homemade Chocolate Zucchini Cake complete with Cream Cheese Icing, maltesers, walnuts to garnish and sparkler candles. Everyone was there. We all pitched in and paid for ingredients to make chicken fajitas, and Aisling (from Ireland) made the food. It was a big success! Lots of fun had, as can be seen in the photos.
Just six days later, we celebrated Christmas. It was the
New Years Baby
For our NYs Party at The Vic, I dressed up as a kid, so I went right ahead and made myself a chocolate milk with Xtra chocolate ;) most beautiful day. Blue sky, sun shining brightly, +35 degrees atleast, and people from all parts of the Globe. We had people from Ireland, England, Holland, Japan, France, Australia, and ofcourse Canada. We had all the BBQ food you could wish for including prawns, chicken wings, burgers, and sausages. There were salads, steamed veggies, potatoes, and bread. There was NO going hungry that day.
We all opened bottles of champagne, or drank refreshing G&Ts with fresh lime, opened presents, and even stockings that Aisling and Ger (the Irish couple) hung up for us.
The next evening was Jason's last night before leaving for Cairns, so the Frenchies organized a Sushi Party with the Japanese backpackers at our house. They were taking over our kitchen with their very talented knack for cooking. They taught us how to make proper SUSHI! We all made a couple of rolls, then sat down on cushions around our living room table to enjoy eachothers masterpieces. It was a job well done!
The night of the 26th, Ger, Aisling and I drove Jason to the Airport and bid him farewell. Tears were almost shed. It was a sad goodbye for all of us

The next occasion to look forward to was New Years 2007. I was scheduled to work that evening at The Vic, and didn't have a chance at getting it off, unless I would've requested it off before I even started. The theme at The Vic Hotel was, "I wish I was a...". We were trying to raise $2000 for the Make a Wish Foundation. I decided to get dressed up in my favorite new dress (the one with the bright pink heart pockets on it) as a KID! I used the Christmas ribbon that Aisling hung around the house for the bows in my pigtails, two different coloured stocking socks as my knee-highs, and a couple of necklaces from fellow house mates as my jewelery. I even used my eyeliner to paint freckles on my cheeks. A few thought I was Pippie Long-Stockings, but most guessed I was a little Kid. It was a fun night! Because I was dressed up as a kid, I made myself a few too many hot chocolates while on shift, which was generally not allowed. At midnight, all the staff counted down to 2007 with a complimentary glass of champagne from our
SUSHI!!!
Amazing Food, amazing People! manager. It was a great night! I ended up working until 2:45 am, then heading home for a few drinks with the house mates.
On January 3rd, I went ice skating with the staff from The Vic for our staff party. It was heaps of fun!!! Everyone expected me to teach them how to skate, because I was from Canada. They were like, "Marie, you must know how to play hockey, so show us a few tricks." Ya right! I thought I was going to look like the guy on the billboard at the rink with the pillow strapped to his bum. I was lucky enough only to have one major wipeout the entire three hours on the ice, and it wasn't even my fault. One of my colleagues came up from behind me and lifted me up as a joke, and he slipped and flew onto his back. I thought he would've been hurt for sure because I had fallen on top of him, but he was alright. I couldn't stop laughing, so they knew I was alright. Afterwards we headed to the pub to eat and drink. It was a fun night out!
My last shift
Ice Skating
Everyone pretty much expected me to give them lessons at the staff party, assuming I knew how to skate because I was from Canada....WRONG! at work was Saturday January 6th, so on Sunday, Leo and I took the train to Fremantle to check out the weekend markets and go out for a nice Italian dinner @ Sandrinos. Mmmmm Lecker! Afterwards, we went to see "Happy Feet". Now, that is the cutest movie we have ever seen! Penguins are just way too cute!
Monday was my last day in Perth and Leo and I were just running around, literally, trying to do everything I had to have done before flying out. I had to get my new mobile phone all sorted out for pickup at the airport, send a huge package home, and PACK! It was crazy how little room I had for SO MUCH stuff. I wouldn't have been able to do it if Leo wasn't there to help me. He even borowed a car from one of our housemates, so he could drive me to the airport at 5 in the morning. It sucked having to say goodbye yet again, but it wouldn't be too long before we'd meet again in Sydney before leaving for Singapore.
Well, I'll leave the other stuff (like the bungee jumping) for my East coast blog
