Europe in Australia complete with our travelled route in yellow!
Thanks to Tez for sending this through to us, kind of puts things in perspective regarding how far we've come and how much we've got left to do! Day 203 - Galena Bridge to Kalbarri
We wake from a good nights sleep beside the river and again we’re not in a terrible rush this morning so potter around a bit before moving on. We start with a bit of reading! Dar’s been reading the “Down Under” book by Bill Bryson, it’s really very funny and covers a lot of the places that we’ve either been to already or are travelling too soon. I’m still battling through “Lace Reader” the book given to me by Bel (of the Elliotts) which at page 117 is finally engaging my imagination, it’s taken a while!
The clock struck 9am and we thought that was late enough to be moving on so we started the 80km journey towards Kalbarri. We passed the first entrance to the national park, the Ross Graham and Hawks Head lookouts which we’ve not been to before and suspect we’ll miss this time aswell! We should really have stopped to visit them on the way in, but we didn’t!
An area of the national park that we will be returning to is Natures Window. This is where our blog profile photograph was taken in January 2008 and
Timbuktu signage in Bristol, UK
Used with thanks from the local BBC news website in Bristol, UK it’s one of our favourite outlooks. We loved Kalbarri when we were last here and although we don’t have loads of time free to explore it fully we do have more than the two days of the last trip.
There is a good visitors centre here so we pop in to gather some information and to find out the prices of the three available caravan parks. Although John’s offer to stay at the Tudor park was a great one we suspect it will be more expensive than the others even with a discount. In the middle of making our decisions we get a call from the Elliott’s which was coincidental because I was in the middle of texting both them and the Reeves! Great to hear from Bel and to hear that they’re now on their way to Monkey Mia but hope to be in Kalbarri on Wednesday … or maybe Thursday! At least the gap is lessening and Kalbarri is a nice enough spot for us to sit and wait, although we suspect there won’t be much sitting!
After much deliberation about which caravan park to choose, we’re not nearly this fussy usually, we pick Anchorage which is at the north end of Kalbarri and seems a friendly little park with a nice view over the river. The other choices were Murchison which is very centrally located but felt cramped and then of course Tudor which is beautiful and has clearly had a lot of money spent on it recently which its smart pool and lovely new cabins. It doesn’t really have much of a view though and it’s a bit of a hike from the town so despite the scrummy bag of tomatoes we’ve opted to stay elsewhere this time but wish John and the team every success.
We spent the rest of the day stocking up on supplies as pretty much everything as run low now but there’s an IGA supermarket just down the road so we give it a right good raid and we’re good to go!
Dar is on dinner duty, while I write the blogs and catch up with the emails, and he cooks up the left over sausage casserole which is now even more tasty with an additional day to season!
We have a great catch up with our very good friend Ed over Skype and would like to congratulate Ray and Lisa on their new puppy Buster. Ace news guys, we can’t wait to take you all on a nice long walk when we get home!! Ha ha!! We’re a bit renowned for ‘short’ walks than have a tendency to go on for hours!
Light hearted news from Ed is the controversy surrounding a signpost alteration in Bristol back home in the UK. Rather than pointing the direction and mileage to Bedminster, the sign has been over written as ‘Timbuktu 2384’! It’s all a bit random but Bristol City Council is not amused saying “it isn’t making the road any safer”. Ed, the MD of Demon Scream Graphics denies any involvement!
We were sent an email a few days ago by very good friends Tez and Bernie in Norway. Tez sent us a picture of Australia proving how big it really is, it swallows Europe whole! We’ve added to the picture by drawing our route so far, it’s a bit of an eye opener! Great to hear from you Tez and we’re really pleased that life is good for you both out there, even if it is a bit cold, quite wet and there’s not too much sunlight! We’ll be back over to see you as soon as we’re home in another mission to keep on travelling if only in short bursts!
It’s an early start for us tomorrow in a bid to get on the walking tracks in the national park before the heat of the day takes hold. That said, we’re off to bed!
