Day 235 (16.11.07)
We have a couple more days before we fly out of Perth to Alice Springs and we'd decided we wanted to spend them in Fremantle as we really liked it there and would get to see Ozzie again before we left. We had a few things to do today before we could leave so we headed into town and were done by lunchtime. They had put up Christmas decorations around the city since we were last here - so strange, to us it doesn't feel like christmas is on it's way - the weather just keeps getting hotter and we can't help associating xmas with winter!
We caught the train the short distance down to Freo and checked into our hostel before heading into town for a wander, checking out a fashion show in the centre of town.
One of the main tourist attractions in Freo is the Prison built using convict labour which was used from1885 up until 1991. Now there are various tours that you can do including a night time torchlight tour which Mark really wanted to do (Chrissie with her wimpish tendencies wasn't so keen but decided to brave it out!
Fitties you would have been proud - no cushions needed!)
We were booked onto the 8.20pm tour and it was just starting to get dark as we arrived. Our tour-guide Sharyn was fantastic, enthusiastic and knowledgable and we began our trip around the prison using the torches provided to check for any hidden surprises. As we toured the prison, visiting the cell blocks, exercises yards, kitchens, whipping post, gallows, solitary confinement block and chapel (all in the dark), Sharyn told us stories of the prison's inmates and some of the many ghost sightings/experiences that they have had. It was an excellent tour with a couple of scary surpirses along the way (won't spoil it for any bloggers reading this and thinking about visiting!) that made us jump out of our skins. Sadly (or maybe thankfully) we didn't see any ghosts during our visit.
Our tour finished we went into town to meet Ozzie for a couple of drinks on a lively friday night in Freo.
Day 236 (17.11.07)
We had a lazy morning today and then caught the train a couple of stopes up to revisit Cottesloe in the daytime. We relaxed on the beach for
the afternoon until we were joined by Conrad, Sabine and her boyfriend Ronan. Today would be our last chance to see them before we all went off in different directions.
A warm afternoon turned into a windy evening and feeling a little chilly we left the beach to go to Sabine and Ronan's place for a barbie, stopping to pick up some sausages on the way. We had a great evening sat in the backyard (not called a garden here!) with some beers and a barbie and then said our final goodbyes before getting back on the train to Freo for a movie in the hostel.
Day 237 (18.11.07)
We packed up, left our hostel and went to see Ozzie at work in the Mad Monk restaurant in town. The cafes and restaurants along the main street were buzzing with people sat in the sunshine having some sunday brunch - very civilised!
Ozzie treated us to a coffee and we sat and chatted whilst he tried to show he was doing his job at the same time! It's been great to catch up with Oz, hopefully we'll catch him again some time in the future.
We caught the train back to Perth and checked into a fab hostel called the Emperor's Crown for our last night on the coast of Western Australia. Tomorrow we head to the Red Centre - very exciting!
We spent the afternoon visiting King's Park with it's fine views over the city. To get into the park we climbed several flights of steps known as Jacob's Ladder. This is used as a form of exercise by locals as they ascend and descend the steps several times for their workout.
Back at the hostel we had a call from Kamma, an Aussie friend we met in Beijing. We knew she lived in Perth and had contacted her with the aim of meeting up only to find when she called that she lives in Freo! So we climbed back onto the train and went back to Freo to meet Kamma for a coffee and a catch up. A great evening - it was lovely to see you - good luck with the baby, let us know when it arrives!
