We have now left the outback and are back on the South coast in Esperance. It was a relatively short drive of 4 hours. We have driven over 2000kms already! Although it is a bit dull at times the roads are very quiet (no chance of getting stuck in a traffic jam around here) and we do have the ipod. The itrip (which lets us play the ipod through the radio) is one of the most useful things we brought with us. We are listening to Tim’s entire music collection of 900 songs on
shuffle so we never know what is coming next.
Yet again we are in a unit on a caravan site. This one is lovely, probably the best so far. We are really liking the whole unit thing. We like cooking for ourselves and it is much better than having to share a hostel kitchen. It is not that expensive and if there were 4 of you in one of these units it would work out supercheap.
Once we got to Esperance we made the obligatory trip to the supermarket and bottleshop. I am sure we have been to every major supermarket chain in Australia. I
am still surprised at how expensive bread, chocolate and vegetables are and how cheap meat is. No wonderer they are always throwing a steak on the barbie!
Anyway, back to Esperance. The Esperance region is famed for having the best beaches in Australia and in our minds it lived up to the claim. On our first afternoon we went on a scenic coast drive that took you to lots of the beaches that are close to town. They were all spectacular. I can’t do them justice by trying to describe them so I have uploaded some photos so you can see for yourself.
Today we went to Cape Le Grand National Park where as unlikely as this sounds the beaches were even better!
We started the day by climbing Frenchman's peak, a 262m high granite peak. The climb was considerably steeper than we were expecting. The leaflet said something about a gentle slope! We made it though and we were rewarded with great views.
After all that exercise we headed to Le Grand Beach for lunch. It was another stunning beach (you are getting the general idea). I have taken a lot of beach photos!
After lunch and yet another walk along the beach we headed to Lucky Bay which is frequently referred to as one of the best beaches in Australia, and the one with the whitest sand. The sand was white and powdery and squeaked when you walked on it! We walked on it a lot. The beach is 3km long, so we decided to walk to the other end to a viewing platform. When we got to the platform we found that there was even more gorgeous looking beach the other side and it was totally deserted. There were at least 6 or 8 people in Lucky bay! We headed down there to explore and take yet more photos of the beach. It was lovely. Unfortunately I managed to find the only bee on over 3km of empty beach and put my toe on it! Eventually we decided we should walk back as we were now at least 4km from the car and had probably taken enough beach photos.
All this gorgeous white sand does have a disadvantage though, it reflects the sun back at you without you noticing! We weren't that hot on the beach as it was fairly breezy
but we were getting fried, and now we look a bit lobsterish! Our necks and chins seem particularly burnt. We had quite a lot of lotion on so goodness knows what we would look like now if we weren't wearing any.
Anyway, enough blogging for now. I think it must be time for the pre dinner drink on the terrace....

OK, maybe
I wasn't sure about your claim of 'Best beach ever' but I have to say, they do look pretty amazing, even having just come back from Mauritius
