This is a copy of an email sent to Nana and Pa while they were still in Thailand.
Thursday (29 July 2010) Mel woke up with the headache still. She had a double cooking class – making tiger toast (toast with vegemite and strips of cheese put under the griller) then a double sport that she doesn't do at the moment with her back so she was only going to really miss out on two periods in the afternoon. The loving mother that I am (!!!!!!!), I gave her the day off BUT YOU ARE GOING TO SCHOOL TOMORROW!!!!!!!!
Thursday afternoon she begged me to ring Marist Sion again. I didn't know if I rang again I would be put in the category of ‘painful pushy mother – do not let family into this school!!!' I finally agreed, wrote a few things down on a piece of paper to help the cause, sent Mel out of the room and , taking a deep breath and praying that I was doing the right thing, rang the school. I explained to the receptionist that I had already spoken to Kaye – enrolment secretary – but I wanted to talk to someone again as I had to do something. The lady said that I would have to speak to Kaye again “is that OK?”
Kaye got on the phone and, before I could say anything other than my name she said ‘I just tried to ring you. Your home phone was engaged so I thought at least you are home'. Then said she wanted Mel to come down and have an interview with the principle – when can you come down? I said right now but the principle was busy she wanted it before next Wednesday as the 'next year' year 9's have to choose their electives that day and she wanted Mel to be there if she got in.
We organised it for 11.30 this morning. I then had to get on the phone to work!! Luckily Kehn didn't have any patients so they gave me the morning off. So much for telling Mel she had to go to school today!!!!! We got to Marist Sion at 11.15 this morning – with a nervous mother and very very nervous and excited daughter. All the way down I questioned Mel (as if I was principle) on why she wanted to move etc. The
first question was directed at me – oh – I hadn't prepared myself for that!!!! We talked for about 30 minutes when he said that he would like to offer Melissa a place at the school. It took a quite a few minutes before I had the chance to actually ask when she could start – next week or next year?. Uniform shop is only open on a Wednesday so it was decided either next Thursday or the following Monday.
So, on the Monday 9th August, Mel is starting at Marist Sion!!!!!! Very exciting. Very scary. We only have Sunday afternoon and end of next week to get everything organised!
What a shock – within 20 hours we have gone from no spots available this year or next to starting school in 10 days.
We all very excited here – well, until I saw the paperwork I have to complete!!
