So we finally left Adelaide. It took us 8 months, but we finally did it.
I finished up work on Monday 27th October. My last shift was actually meant to be on the Tuesday night, but I wasn't feeling 100% all Monday night (left work a little earlier because of it). I couldn't sleep well at all that night, and work up on Tuesday feeling terrible. I had a feeling what is was (and I blame Cassie!!) 😊 but I went down to the doctor, who diagnosed me with my first time of tonsillitis and gave me some antibiotics! It made sense, I could barely swallow I was in so much pain, and I just felt exhausted 😞 So I went into work (I went in on the way to the doctors to call in sick...in my uniform! Would have looked a bit wierd, but I wanted to say goodbye to people too...) and gave them the doctors certificate, and then went home and sat on the couch watching the OC and relaxed. Worst possible timing, because I really needed to be packing, but I had managed to pack a lot of it up already. I was meant to be
heading out for goodbye drinks that night with Steve's work crowd, but decided it probably wasn't the best idea and stayed home and tried to sleep it off.
Much better night sleep Tuesday night, still not feeling well Wednesday though. Steve and I were up early, and caught the bus to Adelaide Airport to pick up our rental car. Steve was not happy! We had ordered a Ford, but we got a Holden in the same class! Hehe poor Steve 😞 We drove back and packed up our car, heading on the road around 2pm.
Our first night stop was Hahndorf, which wasn't even an hour away from Adelaide, but it was this cute little German town that I really wanted to have a look at. We booked into the caravan park and set up our tent quickly, and then drove into town to explore. It was so adorable!! It had this old time German feel to it. We wandered around for about an hour, and then went to the well known pub there to have a stein of beer...and they had run out!! We had to settle for pints, but Steve found a beer that he aboslutly
loved (apparently it tasted like a banana smoothie). We then went into the same pub for a massive dinner of bratwurst and other authentic German food. We were both so full, and I was struggling because I still couldn't swallow properly but I didn't want to miss out on the awesome food. Had a very restless night sleep - between me being sick, we were both restless, and the weather was loud.
It was easy to get up the next morning, because we had both been off and on sleeping (the night never seemed to end!! I didn't want to check my clock because I knew it would be so much earlier then I thought it was), so we were packed up and ready to go by 7am. We stopped at the fresh fruit market opposite the caravan park for some breakfast, and then headed on the road again. Long hot day drive, and it was beautiful. We went to the Naracoorte Caves and wandered around there and had a much needed coffee. Stopped in Penola (which I remember from my road trip with mum and dad), which is the home of Mary McKillop. We stopped for lunch in
Mt Barker, where we just sat on the lookout making sandwiches - and saw the Blue Lake, which was blue! Haha but absolutly gorgeous 😊 We continued our drive and crossed the border not long after (was funning taking photos of the border, a commodore sitting on the stateline people must of been slowing down thinking we were cops). Straight away we noticed the difference in the bush around us, because it suddenly got so green!! We arrived in Port Fairy late afternoon, the place where we were staying the night. We set up camp and then drove into town (could have walked but we were lazy), had a beer at the oldest continuously licensed pub in Australia, and then ate fish and chips down on the wharf. It was aboslutly perfect, I loved the little seaside town. After dinner we went back to the tent and parked the car, and then wandered down to the most beautiful beach as dusk settled in. It got cold very quickly once the sun started going down, and the mosquitos were terrible!! 😞 We sat around with a couple of drinks, but the mosquitos got too much to bear, and we were in
bed very early that night.
Great Ocean Road time!! 😊 It was terrible weather, something we were disappointed about, because we kept getting out of the car to see the sights, and then were very cold (althought luckily it wasn't really raining, just windy. But it was still absolutly gorgeous. And I finally saw the 12 Apostles! (after missing them on my first road trip). Our initial plan was to stay in Port Campbell the night, but when we arrived at lunch, and saw there really wasn't much to do and it was cold and wet, we decided to just get lunch and then keep heading down the road. We drove the beautiful winding roads on the way to Apollo Bay, where we arrived early in the night, and set up camp. Steve absolutly loved the scenery of Apollo Bay. The next morning we were able to take our time getting up, then drove on to Lorne, which was a completely winding road right on the cliff face - a scary drive but fantastic views. Lorne we both fell in love with. It was busy, because one thing we hadn't realised was that it was a long weekend in
Melbourne (with the Melbourne Cup making Tuesday a public holiday, most people took the Monday off work and went away for a 4 day weekend), but it meant that there was a really good atmosphere around the campsite, and around Lorne in general. The campsite was also really close to everything, so we were able to walk around a bit. We got into the holiday spirit, and went nextdoor to the shops and bought bbq stuff and some beams. I ended up spending the night watching the OC in the car on the portable DVD player (I was trying to get it finished!!) while Steve drunkingly rang home and spoke to everyone.
Up early the next morning, we headed to Erskine Falls, about a 10 minute drive inland from Lorne, and it was absolutly gorgeous. We walked the 400m stairs down to the bottom of the falls, and even climbed the barrier (as other people were also doing) to climb the rocks right up to the bottom of the falls. The walk up the stairs wasn't so nice, but think of the exercise! 😊 We then drove onto Melbourne. I wasn't thinking, and drove us straight into the city...not
realising how hard that was going to be (hook turns!?) for Steve driving. We went into St Kilda and wandered around the Markets for a bit (it was Sunday by this stage, and the famous St Kilda Markets were on), and then we drove on Googs directions to his place in North Melbourne (on the other side of the city) which was where we were staying until we found another place...which hopefully wouldn't take too long! 😊
Was sooo good seeing Goog, and after an afternoon relaxing and getting refreshed, we went to the main strip of North Melbourne and had an awesome dinner...I just can't remember the name of the restaurant!! 😊 But they sold massive wagon wheels, which we had for dessert.
So arrived in Melbourne. Now all we have to do is find jobs and a proper place to live 😊
