Our second day started cold, clowdy and windy. No good predictions for my helicopter flight!!! But before that we went again to have a look to the coast from different lookouts...by the way, this part of the coast is around 4000 km away of the antartica, nothing inbetween, just the Southern Ocean, which is famous for its strong currents and big waves even if it not windy. i think i have never seen waves of that size before...
In this part of the coast there have been lots of shipwrecks (more than 150 shipwrecks! which are by the way protected by the OZ National Park laws) because of the currents and the magnetic force of the Antartica which made the navigator systems turn down. oh, by the way, 80% of the antartica's territory belongs to Australia!! One of the most famous stories about shipwrecking is the one of the loch Ard, an Irish ship, that in 1878 on a foggy night relied on the navigation system (which was not working well because of the magnetism of the atartica) and therefore hit the cliffs. There were only 2 survivors (tom &Eva) both 18 years old and there are lots of different
the London Bridge
where the affaire became public!! love story versions of them (he saved her, she loved him, she had to leave back to irland, he went over, then couldnt find her...blablabla), but no hollywood happy end happened. On the top of the mainland here you can find the Loch Ard cementary, which is run by locals (no governmental help) and where some of the people who died in the famous shipwreck are burried..
and then my highlight of the day took place!! I flew with an helicopter over the whole coast!!! it was amazing!! such great views!!! absolutly stunning!!! I also did some videos, but i cannot upload them from this computer. a pity, because they are really nice! Even the weather changed a lot and the sun came out, perfect for this lfight! It was the first time for me to fligh in an helicopter, and it was much stable than what i thought! i always had the impression that helicopters had to move a lot, but not at all!! and the viws were great. Even the ones over the mainland were great: very very green and pretty flat. i dont know if you are familiar with helicopter-flight-rates, but they use to be very very
Bay of Islands
one of the rockformations zoomed in.. expensive. I paied 60 $ (around 40 euros), for 8 minutes!! i tell you, these were the fastes 8 minutes of my life, and the fastest 60 dollars spent in my life aswell!!! haha but it was defenetly worth!!
We then continued the trip up the coast, stopping at different famous lookouts: London Bridge, ( which once was a double-arched rock platform linked to the mainland, but in 1990 one of the arches (the one that connected the rock with the mainland) collapsed into the sea. In that precise moment two people were standing on the platform and could not come back to the mailand. An helicopter had to save them. Big story in all the news, because they were a man and a woman...a boss and his secretary having an affaire!!! hahaha funny story!! big headlines, imagine!! ), Bay of Martyres and Bay of Islands.
Our next stop was in the Grampians National Park, one of Victoria's (the state) most outstanding natural features. It suffered of anhorrible fire last year, which burned a huge part of the eucaliptus forest. There are lots of plants growing now, but there are still lots of traces left of the fire and
The Grand Canyon
on the way up to the pinnacle! it gives the whole park a dark look..We parked at the Wunderland Parking at started to go up the mountain. The Hinking lasted about 2 hours, but was really nice. On the way up we passed the 'Grand Canyon', a small patch that passed between big rockformatins. The way up was pretty steep, but it was sooooo beautiful once you got to the top, that all the tireness was inmediately gone. very very nice. not good to go there if you are afraid of the high, because there are no fences at all...good place to commit suicide, by the way! hehe
We then drove to the next spot, the Reed lookout, where the famous Balconies stand out of the cliffs..not really very save to step on them, so i prefered not to try it...but the views here very gorgeous, because the light of the sunset gave a red-yellow colour to the forest... We spent the night at one of Adventure tours owed accomodation, which was really good, even with a great special heater for when you came out of the shower!! haha it was soooo cold, that for me it was like gold! 😊
