San Remo
Bridge to Phillip Island Monday started with heavy cloud and showers, but gradually the sun came through. So the washing was done and The MH and trailer both got a much needed bath. Mary quoted the old Percil ad where 'you can really see the difference!'
After lunch the weather cleared so we decided to drive to Phillip Island. There are numerous attractions on the Island - the Chocolate Factory, The Penguin Rookery, and the amazing coast which was the feature of the day for us. Well we confess to consuming excellent chocolate and seeing penguin as well.
It was only a short drive from Wonthaggi to San Remo through rolling country side. Flocks of sheep more like seen in NZ, and cattle.
At San Remo (small town) we crossed the bridge to Phillip Island.
We planned to go around the Island clockwise, our first stop being Cape Woolamai. With a cold southerly blowing, we decided not to walk down to the pinnacles at the tip of the cape. Luckily with a powerful tele lense we were able to capture a peep at the unusual rocky shore line.
The Woolamai Surf beach is really beautiful. Today was the day that

We back tracked from there to the Colonades, an unusal ribbed rocky structure.
Heading west we passed the Phillip Island Grand Prix Raceway and there were motorcyclists out there ripping around the course.
We continued down to Pyramid Rock. Access was down a rutted metal road. Initially David drove slowly - that made our teeth rattle. He sped up to 80ks, and the journey was smooth and sweet.
This point has unusual rocky outcrops. We spent time here drinking in the sight.
Next we moved to the most western point, The Nobbies. This is the point where the fairy penguins come up to their nests at or after sunset. If you do nothing else, come to this point. We spent probably an hour mesmerised by the surging seas as the tide came in. The southern coast of Phillip Island is in Bass Strait, and Nobbies is the entrance to Port Phillip, so there are churning currents as the tides rise. There is a really good board walk to the cliff face. Make sure to go to the far left hand end. This is the most magical
and mind absorbing coast, particularly on a day with a good swell running. The colours, power, rocks, texture - everything.
All along the cliff face were nesting boxes, and with the aid of a good camera we were able to photograph a chick waiting for mum and dad to come home with fish soup!
After this time, we all felt fully satisfied, taken zillions of photos, and decided to head to the chocolate factory to end the day on a sweet note. Last November we visited the Mareeba Choc factory, and in some ways that was more interesting. But I must say the quality of the chocolate was right up there. We bought dark ginger - it disappeared very quickly. Sorry Dr, I forgot your eating instructions.
The four of us then headed back to our camp site at Wonthaggi very chirpy and possibly on a combination of a fully satisfying afternoons photography and a sugar high.
