Melbourne International AirportMelbourne International AirportMelbourne International Airport

...to be fair this was the budget terminal...but it looked more like a prison!!
And so on the final leg of our Australian trip we flew to Melbourne. We flew of a Thursday evening with the budget of all budget airlines; so budget in fact that the airline doesn’t have it’s own access to the terminal (we collected our bags from a shed to the side of the actual airport) and the day after we flew, they had their flying license revoked for flying malpractice! Regardless, waiting outside the shed was the one and only Sarah Blessing which was a sight for sore eyes 😊

We stayed in Melbourne for just under a week, and for that time we stayed in Sarah and Jonathan’s fabulous home in Fawkner. Life in hostels teaches you many things, including how to make quick and easy dinners using as little dishes and space as possible as you jostle with fellow backpackers for any available space on the cooker top. Bearing this in mind, Sarah and Jono had made us Beef and Guinness stew, with homemade bread and mash - luxury never seen as part of hostel life! Amazing!

The Friday Francis, Sarah and I we took the tram out to St Kilda in glorious sunshine, and sat outside La Roche for some lunch and jugs of beer (Bo-ags!). We met Jonathan for some after-work drinks back in the city when we got back in. There is nothing sweeter than some after-work drinks when you haven’t been working!! That night Barry, Bec, Alannah and Paul also came in to meet us. It was absolutely amazing catching up and being around amazing friends again. It’s nice not having to say “Laura and Francis….Ireland….Well, I’m from Dublin and Francis is from Limerick….No, No Career Breaks…..Yeah, VERY lucky….” for a change 😊

Saturday we were all a bit worse for wear and I found out about the DELIGHT of a Powerade! I’ll never look back! We spent Saturday night eating home-made pizzas and lasagne watching an AFL game with Jono’s sister (hello Kayla!) and her boyfriend. Sunday was a trip into Brunswick street to meet up with Barry, Bec and Alannah for some food and drinkies and Sunday night was dinner in the Italian quarter of Lygon Street followed by some Gelato...nom nom nom….

Monday, Francis and I rented a car and, along with Sat Nav, drove the Great Ocean Road. There were some great sights along the way

Winter Sunshine and great company!!
including the 12 Apostles…well I don’t think there are 12 anymore…maybe 8??? Monday evening then we were invited to Jono’s parents for dinner where we ate the most amazing food (homemade gnocchi anyone?) and met the now infamous Nana Gina!

Tuesday we pottered about the city in museums, shops, Vic Markets and accidentally took a free guided tram journey of the city. After work we met Sarah and Jono in a micro-brewery for a few drinks then headed to the best Greek restaurant I have ever eaten in and for some cocktails afterwards. Wednesday was one of my highlights as Sarah drove us to Ramsay street! Well, I was amazed!!

It was devastating leaving Melbourne and all the people we had met up with there, but thanks to you all for a really great visit xxx
