Our House
This is where our new place is... hello everyone! ive decided to set this site up (inspired by tom, thanks cuz! haha) to document mine and stus melbourne experiences, it seems easier to keep up to date than the group email thing, and it allows you to choose whether or not to read it! ill try and attach photos when relevant as i know they are always more interesting than words, but basically i'll try to keep you all up to date with life in melbourne throughout the course of the year!
well the first week is over, we arrived with the sole goal of finding a house. our budget was originally $200-250 p/week, which after about 2 days we discovered was totally unrealistic after walking through a couple of dark, dingey houses which were just plain depressing. so after getting the calculator out and writing up some sort of budget we decided we could stretch to $280 p/week which opened up alot of other options. we had too very busy days looking around houses, as they all seem to set their inspection times within 10 minutes of each other! the guuy who im staying with at the moment, mark, let us borrow his advertising company sponsored
Marcus
Drinking with an inflatable kangaroo, thats how its done in Melbourne... skyy vodka smart car for the day which not only allowed us to race around the city and see all the houses but got us alot of 'compliments' from passer bys. marcus then stepped up on saturday and drove us around to see another 7-8 places between 11:30 and 1pm, 3 of which we liked and handed in applications. we hadn't heard anything for a few days and started hearing horror stories from people in our situation who had been looking for houses for 2-3 months. well i had to leave marks place by the end of the week, and our stuff was in transit from perth and we started to stress a little. although that afternoon got a call back from one of the agents to say wed been accepted, much to our relief, and for a house we actually wanted! its in prahran (see map) so good location close to chapel st and st kilda, and on a bus line straight into the city. we move in next thursday (16th march) so weve got a week of relaxing and crusing around melbourne trying not to spend too much money. neither of us officially have jobs yet but were hoping that shouldnt be too hard to figure out.
it hasnt all been plain sailing though, weve met up with marcus a few times since weve been here and went drinking at his place last saturday, eug was over with a couple of his workmates on 'tax camp' so it was more a perth reunion than anything! a new drinking game was formed as we were drinking carlton draught, whereby u ask the question on the bottle top and if anyone gets it right you have to skull the whole beer but if the guessers get it wrong they have to down half. we also introduced a concept called 'insurance' whereby if u had an easy question u could take insurance meaning the drinking amounts were halved. many beers were drunk by all, player of the night - marcus - who got 4 of his questions answered in a row.
despite getting lost on public transport a few times melbourne has been quite easy to navigate and understand, after spending hours on realestate.com.au and staring at the melways the image of st kilda, prahran and the city are permanently burnt into our brains. although we did managed to lock ourselves out of marks house once, and by lock ourselves out i mean we got stuck on a balcony measuring 4m by 1m, 3 floors up every set of apartment keys locked inside the house. after both passing of the challenge of scaling a plastic drainpipe to the 4th floor window which was opened and neither having any luck with the credit card in the door trick we had to call a locksmith who dutifuly came up the stairs, unlocked the door and then laughed at us as he let us in, it wasnt our proudest moment but these things happen in the big city!
anyway thats the first week, not alot happened, but we did find a house which were both very proud of, ill attach some of the photos which are on the website but after moving in next thursday im sure itll look a whole lot better! ill try and keep this updated as often as i can, keep in touch with regards to how life is in perth, leeds, san diego, syndey, vermont, japan or wherever you are this year and were now taking bookings for the couch as of the 16th! - adam
